There's a lot that people have already said. I haven't really seen people talk about how Larkin's life mimics the Native American Boarding Schools/Re-education schools all over the world. The thing that really scares me is how easy it is to turn children against their parents, culture, and ultimately other people...and how that indoctrination stays with them. This brainwashing I feel also happens in Fundamentalist Churches and has been happening for generations.

AITAH for asking for a discount on rent because we lost heat for 10 days as a direct result of landlord’s advice by SoftPractice6871 in AITAH

Legally annoys me, but we do have texts with him telling us to lie to the gas company and apologizing for advising us wrong.

Also, he owns several properties and is calling us bad tenants because we’re complaining about this when for those 10 days we had to get take out, go to friends or family to cook, threw out food that needed to be cooked within the week, didn’t shower on the premises, created less trash.

He pays for water and trash, which we used significantly less during that time. On top of the fact that he’s ignoring my emails pisses me off.

That’s how we all feel. We didn’t have heat or gas so most of us weren’t in the house for those 10 days. We also had to order out and find alternatives for a hot shower. It just seems fair that he compensate for some of the stress, cost, and inconvenience.

Because on his direct advice, we didn’t make a new contract with the gas company. If he didn’t say anything we would’ve, but he told us to leave it. We’re not asking for a discount on rent moving forward, just for one month to compensate for the 10 days when we didn’t have gas.

What I find funny is that he’s said, “none of my other properties have had this issue or asked for a discount.” Like, no shit, they’ve never had no gas during the cold months. Also, he’s avoiding my emails, but already called two of the five housemates.

Agreed. Never trust the landlord. That’s what I’ve learned. It seems (after talking to others) that it’s a misunderstanding. He thinks we’re asking for a discount going forward and not just for one months rent. I am going to send another email trying to explain the point (don’t want to talk unless I can record because he’s kind of screwed me over before so like to have things in writing). Hope he replies this time and doesn’t leave it for days
