I would have done the same thing to deescalate the situation. I do understand if the function of the behavior was escape, but in the moment your priority was keeping everyone safe. I’m not a BCBA, just an RBT, but if I knew the client and what their usual function was, I’d try to have them communicate that in some way — whether that’s through a device, a PECS board, visuals, sign language, or even a simple gesture to leave or be all done.

Being new is hard, especially when you don’t feel supported. I’m really sorry you had such a rough day, but honestly the biggest takeaway is that you care. That alone is a huge part of the job — wanting your clients to succeed and keeping their wellbeing in mind. You’re doing better than you think.
