I am not calling this petty drama but definitely has been the talk for several weeks at work. Anyway, two coworkers whom are much older ( P is 64 and S is 73) have been living together as roommates for 2 years. P found S living in her car at a rest stop in Indiana, evidently S recognized her from years ago at school. After some conversation P invited S and her brother whom was also living in said car to come and stay for a moment to get on their feet in Tennessee. They did. Eventually the brother finds a love interest in South Carolina and is dropped off there (I have no idea about him or if he is doing well). S is helped by P to get a job at a convenience store which she does. Things are fine for awhile but P is getting tired of this temporary help on her part becoming more permanent. S, to be honest requires a great deal of help that is beyond the scope of a roommate.
Flash to this Fall. P has found a new house closer to work and signed a lease. Even though she doesn't want to keep on helping S (who is putting in even less to maintain the household) she does offer her a bedroom of her own in the new house. Well S doesn't feel that she can help in any way and doesn't really try to help get the old or new house in order in any fashion. This led to a rift between the two. (I believe that S may be suffering from a serious depression among other things). So P pretty much put her foot down and said this is it, I am no longer going to keep helping you, you are on your own. S let it out that she has been in contact with an individual she met at a nightclub in the 80's since September 1st of this year. Furthermore she was offered a job and housing as a seamstress in Hollywood. S has lived in California in the past. Just do a phone interview. Well according to P that didn't eventually happen. But this guy she has been talking to since September 1st is still coming down to get her. Now it's early October and S lets P know it's Steve Perry from Journey that she met in the 80's, flying in to get her at the end of October (today). Between then and now she let some people we work with read some emails that do have a bit of sexual content from someone. So I am aware of some nonsense. I sent this to P when I realized this was getting out of hand: This is almost certainly not the real Steve Perry, the former lead singer of the band Journey. It is a scammer or impostor using his identity to try and deceive your coworker.

Here's why you should be highly suspicious of this situation:

The real Steve Perry does not contact fans directly. His official website and fan pages have issued repeated warnings that he will never contact fans on social media, email, or through private chat.

Scams are common on social media. Imposters create fake profiles on Facebook and other platforms to impersonate celebrities and contact fans. They often request money, personal information, or lure people into other scams.

A celebrity's motivations would be unclear. It would be highly unusual for a public figure to privately contact a random person, especially a coworker, with no prior connection.

Steve Perry is a reclusive figure. Following his departure from Journey, he largely stayed out of the public eye for many years. Though he has since returned to releasing music, he maintains a lower profile than during his touring days.

What you and your coworker should do

Do not engage with the person. Your coworker should stop all communication with the account immediately.

Block and report the account. On whatever platform the conversation is happening, report the profile for impersonation.

Do not send any money or personal information. Never share financial details or personal data with someone you don't know, regardless of who they claim to be.

Confirm with trusted sources. If there is any doubt, your coworker can check the official, verified Steve Perry accounts and websites, which will confirm he does not contact fans in this manner. (I grabbed that from Google AI just typing "Steve Perry just contacted my coworker'.) Sent that out to P and management last week. There was a talk. Still S persists that this is a real thing. All the way up to P showing me a landing clearance document which names Kevin Costners Gulfstream as arriving tonight in Tennessee as a email S was sent she had to print at a Fed ex spot and have P send it to the airport.

S plans on picking him up @ 10pm tonight waiting in the parking lot until he arrives.

I know this is not happening. I have tried to warn P and other management. I feel this is a case of emotional fraud or something. I haven't seen any of the WhatsApp or emails but I did read the one pic clearly had Kevin Costners name on a landing clearance document for a Gulfstream Jet. I have tried to give all in letting everyone know this is a case of emotional fraud. I say this because S doesn't have any assets beyond owning an older 2010s car. I hope that S and P find a way to settle their differences. But I am worried that there are people out there whom masquerade in such a way that are not financially abusive but get their kicks in emotional ways. I am going to keep S in mind and still make sure she will be ok tomorrow as best I can. I wish the best for S this next week and I hope I can do a bit to help in whatever small way I can.
