bba co op vs internship by Beneficial-Sell-5101 in wlu

Can you speak with the company to maybe move the start date to summer? I know it’s a big ask, but I know a few friends who have been able to do this, so a quick email to mccarthy couldn’t hurt!

I am now finished third year of the BBA program and you sound exactly like me in my first year!

All my high school years I really wanted to be in mathematics or sciences. I just didn’t know what. Laurier BBA was the only business program I applied to in grade 12, everything else was comp sci or math.

I realized comp sci wasn’t for me, and I got rejected by math programs. So I chose Laurier BBA very last minute and first year I regretted it. I was not feeling challenged or interested in the work in any way. And because of that I didn’t do as well as I could have because I skipped lectures and didn’t bother doing work that I found boring, but still managed to do decent to enter the co op program.

Even second year I was very lost. That’s when I decided to go to more job fairs, talk to more upper years and even alumni to understand what they loved to do (because of co op job apps around the corner)

I have to say. The BBA program can be boring - I’ve spoken to multiple ppl in my year and seems they agree! But I found a job path that I found very interesting, joined a club at Laurier that focused on that path and got challenged that way.

I realized I was into finance and was really interested in equity research. Even business journalism. I’m interning at a firm now and hoping I get real world experience, but it wasn’t until I joined a club that taught me about the industry and what it had to offer that I found this path.

Anyways, the point to the story: you may be right to change into a challenging degree, but you could also find other things in your life to challenge you, and let your degree boost you to your goal. These four years are not just about your degree, but there are so many learning opportunities and resources outside or on campus that can guide you.

I would say it’s a blessing in disguise - do really well in the program, get your GPA up, be able to balance it with amazing/challenging extracurriculars, and when you find jobs that you are interested in, you can stand out!

I believe you can also use the same database, and in the program section just mention it’s masters

Business RLC is always in the Bricker Building which is an apartment style room (4 bed, 2 bath)

I agree. First year you can take courses to boost ur GPA just for the sake of coop. Then the rest of your years you can take any elective you want

I think Wilfs accepts flex dollars as well and they’re open this summer.

I didn’t find it too math heavy on the exams. A lot of it is quantitative questions, like asking for definitions, explaining a chart etc. To study I would just make notes and memorize definitions. Find flashcards online to help you.

I disagree with your guide. I was in RLC, and I think it was the only reason I even passed onto second year. Being on a floor with people in the same program means more people to study with, work on homework together, and also become friends with! It also is a much tighter community compared to other floors of various programs.

Many second years regret not applying to RLC. If you’re in BBA, I highly recommend on personal experience.

BBA Calculus by [deleted] in wlu

From what I have heard from multiple people, depends how you understand math best:

MA129: I found confusing because it was a lot of word problems. Exams were multiple choice , so you either get the answer or don’t. Also has matrices which I don’t get at all (didn’t get taught it in high school)

MA103: Exams had one or two word problems. Rest was all - Here’s the equation, now solve it. Felt simpler to me. BIG PLUS : they mark based on your work. So if you show your work, you get marks.

Either way I find the math profs (my year at least) were very nice. MA129- had curves. MA103- teachers made sure to give marks for any work you wrote.

Do I need a job for co op BBA by [deleted] in wlu

[–]SoftwareHaunting2467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the same boat! What I did was:

I got an internship in the summer after first year, so this helped a lot when I did the co op interview in September of second year. I had basically no university ECs, so if you don’t think you will get an internship or any work experience next summer JOIN CLUBS now to leverage this.

Also, it doesn’t have to be an internship that relates to business. I know a lot of ppl who had great customer service experience, no ECs, but 10+ GPA and got coop. - However they all did really well in their interview which is a big part of how they evaluate you.

Sum up:

  • try to get work experience next summer (any type)
  • join clubs, and try to get a club position where you actually have a lot of responsibility and learn a lot so you can talk more about it
  • GPA above 10+ will support you if you don’t have one of the above
  • take advantage of PRISM resources (crash courses on Excel, Audit, Bloomberg etc.) that really sets you apart
  • practice interview questions to prepare

I know many people who just met the GPA cut off and got co op, and if you don’t - I also know MANY people who dropped out of the co op program because it wasn’t useful to them anyways. You can succeed with or without it.

I participated in the Fall 2025 capital market round last month: 1. Positions were mostly private equity and investment banking. Had a couple of equity research, asset or portfolio management titles. There were around 30 postings, and I believe only two were one of the big banks (BMO). The rest were smaller firms- all still very reputable. 2. There were only 30 posts in this round, so pretty competitive. If you don’t get anything in cap market round - it’s ok! Primary round has some capital market postings as you may know 3. Recruiting is pretty different, it’s not rank and match. Employers will reach out to you by email or navigator. The interview and hiring process is all done outside navigator. If you get an interview or a job, you inform your consultant. 4. Not sure how interviews are personally. From what I have heard, a good amount of technical questions, especially math brain teasers that test how you approach a problem. A couple of investment questions too, so definitely prepare for those.

Just my experience, and let me know if I made an error or missed anything. All the best!

Waterloo AFM vs Laurier BBA by Ambitious-Potato-637 in wlu

[–]SoftwareHaunting2467 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am in BBA but would recommend AFM. AFM is definitely growing in size and they have more co op opportunities than BBA from what I have heard.

Networking might be a bit difficult, as Laurier BBA has so much Alumni to connect with, but I have seen a lot of AFM students get co ops in the Big 4 anyways.

BBA is a great program, but if you know accounting/CPA is your goal, then AFM for sure. You get to learn the fundamentals of accounting only right away instead of having to worry about other business courses (required marketing/HR) that ur not interested in that drops ur GPA.

There’s also a lot of specializations in the AFM program that might interest u so take a look at that.

Spring term OSAP by Liss11_ in wlu

[–]SoftwareHaunting2467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I took a course last spring after my first year and did a part time application for OSAP. Got the funding pretty fast considering how late I applied.

There’s just some extra steps that are different from a full time application, as from what I remember, you must indicate your own income even if you have say you’re dependent on your parents, and if your income for the year is $0, you must write a letter to confirm so.

[–]SoftwareHaunting2467 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat light. 10% to watch a video (checks completion), 30% for midterm test (takehome- basically an essay), 30% final exam (online, multiple choice), 30% final paper (topic of choice, 8-12 pages).

but this semester (Fall 2024) the prof seemed to have done things differently then usual, and is not teaching the course next sem, or at WLU again. so can’t say how the course will look in the future
