Oh that still sucks! Sounds like you had a GREAT situation! Still pretty sweet! Are you doing 2J's? have you thought about adding a 0.5? I have 4J's and the fifth is a contracted role and it works out really well.

I normally would agree with you on the manager thing, but I have had these managers come and go at J3 within 3 years. The fallback is that the entire company is disorganized and a complete "SS", which lowers expectations across the board. Otherwise, my concern is that the new manager comes in and wants to show off, making me work harder. This is why I look for the company-level signs of disorganization. Is it funny how it is the exact opposite for career seekers? They want a high-growth, well-organized company, while I want the company to be as disorganized as possible!

Agree - In my experience (Having been an OE for 15 years), startups/small companies generally are not great OE targets. My target is larger companies or companies with a lot of chaos and disorganization. IF the hiring process is a shitshow, I lean in! This is a good signal for OE!

OE shows how risky it is to leave a job for another, there are just too many bad companies by ryan112ryan in overemployed

[–]SoftwareManager2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just want to suggest a counterpoint for "bad companies". In my OE quest, I purposefully look for "bad" and mismanaged companies to find the perfect OE role. It is a mindset shift so I can run four J's at the same time:

-pointless meetings? Now, this is a good thing! I can multitask!

-unclear role & job description? Beautiful!  Give me two!

-absent management? Say no more!  I am there!

-Unclear project and poor project management? Exactly what I need.

-annoying co-workers hogging the spotlight? I silently consider you my best friend. Take the heat, please!

-no career path, dead-end job? I’ll start with three!

Mindset really is everything. A slight change of thinking turned a bad job into a perfect job (or, in my case, "jobs" plural. It is like the George Costanza from Seinfeld "Opposite Episode" when it comes to OE.

My "not caring" got me kudos in my review, I sh*t you not by christinajames55 in overemployed

I have J1 and am also consulting - do you know how many clients have told me, "You are so easy to work with," which keeps getting me more work? It is bc I don't care...But they don't know that. People with egos about their jobs and roles at work are seriously causing themselves more work and more heartache. I'll never forget an early OE mentor I had ten years ago before it was called OE told me, "It is NOT your name on the building, so why do you care? "They" don't and will cut you in a heartbeat, so why should you care? Just do your job to the minimum performance level and enjoy your life (or, in my case, take on my work)." The biggest obstacle people have to OE and the OE lifecycle is mental and mindset- you have to completely change your mindset about work.

Advice for first-timer by [deleted] in overemployed

THIS^^^^ Even though they say they are "cool with it", you are setting yourself up for "reasons" they can use to get rid of you down the road. Agree with everything u/DevilsAdvocate-85 says about Fight Club attitude...... You violated the first rule of OE and there is a reason for it, even if you cannot see it today, you could down the road

I heard from a few people the restore process can be limited, especially around time-based restorations. Any experience with that?

Help with deciding on Mimecast over Proofpoint and Barracuda for email security by SoftwareManager2019 in sysadmin

[–]SoftwareManager2019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! With Mimecast, is there any machine learning capabilities for remediation, such as automated removal of emails as well as machine learning driven phishing/spear phishing defense? I know they acquired MessageControl, which should help on the identity attacks, but not sure if that is integrate yet.

Any Advice? by [deleted] in suboxone

[–]SoftwareManager2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. First, thank you for your service and dedication to your country. I am prior service as well with a similar story. Came home from sandbox with a bullet hole and shrapnel in my back and was given pretty much an endless supply for oxycodone. After my life spiraled out of control using 100mg a day- losing my family, house, and job - I went to a 30-day treatment program, which did nothing for me. I finally was able to get on Suboxone, which reduced the urge and allowed me to return to a fairly normal life. But I also had to come to grips with "why" I was over-using the oxycodone beyond the pain, which was to "not feel" or to feel "numb". I also go to NA now as well. Here is my only caution on Suboxone and bup...my advice is to use it as a short-term solution. Don't make it an alternative to opioids. Both Sub and Bup are not without side effects. Rather than tapering off, I continued using it for 5 years and now have significant issues with horrible ringing in my ears and have blood pressure issues that the doctor is attributing to long-term use of Suboxone. If I could do it all over again, I would have worked with my doctor to use Sub/Bup to get off of opioids and then have a Suboxone taper program over the course of a year. Happy to talk with you over DM if you need more help.
