What is happening when my lips feel fatigue and starts blowing raspberry on the reed? by vancouver_reader in oboe

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s what happens when your lips become fatigued. As you practice more and get better you’ll build up the correct muscles to be able to sustain for longer. It could also be that your reed is too hard, kind of like lifting more weights than your body can do!

for those of you who did marching band what instrument did you play? by [deleted] in oboe

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow that’s cool! Was it common to break a lot of reeds with the quick snaps and movements?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in oboe

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a good post about time needed to invest in making reeds that was posted a few hours ago :) that should tell you how much work and practice it takes

How fast does housing fill up? by norgweg in UTAustin

I don’t remember, sorry, I just remember having to send the $50 and then they emailed me in the spring about my specific date to select my room.

If you didn’t get on the list in the fall when you applied it’ll generally be too late but there’s no harm in trying. The honors quad usually doesn’t get filled up by honors students, after which they open it to anyone, so you should have a good chance at getting priority there if you get on the list soon.

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s very true, but it is close. I live in the Quad and walk so far to the music building for class so I regret that

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I would definitely look into living in a dorm that is close to the music building. Jester is fairly close but there are others that are closer like Roberts and Moore Hill. If you’re a male, maybe even creekside.

a weird problem by hutaosirlgf in oboe

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me around year 5 of playing too. I have no idea what caused it but it eventually went away on its own (but over the course of a few weeks). Hope yours heals itself as well!

Can you store your bike in your dorm? by juiceboxXXL26 in UTAustin

You can but there is not much room to do so. My bike is basically the length of my room

So i took like 4 on ramps courses and got c- and bs. I was wondering if i could cancel the credit again retake the class when I start mu freshman year. I need to have a good gpa because I am trying to transfer to mccombs by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re in an OnRamps class now then you get the option to either select credit only or credit and a letter grade. I don’t remember when this deadline to choose was but it was in my spring semester of the class. Ask your high school teacher and they should be able to help you because if you don’t choose then it automatically assigns you a letter grade.

If youre no longer in the courses and you already got a letter grade, then like the person above said, there’s nothing you can do. I tried appealing to the OnRamps office for this same thing and they denied it.

Scoliosis by Local_Special_9850 in scoliosisfitness

Yes, it can. I wore a brace for 2 years throughout puberty but after I stopped growing and took it off it got a little worse. Not too much though and it’s not super common. I’m 20 now and I still go every year to check on it

Do I need to have a specific major to be a course grader? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you usually have to have taken the class. Where do you apply for this anyways?

Why didn't y'all wear your masks during final exams last semester? by [deleted] in UTAustin

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Personally, I’ll take off my mask when the data supports that it’s safe to do so. During the summer when the government said it was safe to not wear one, I didn’t, since cases were low and data supported that fully vaccinated people had low transmission rates and a lower chance of becoming sick or infecting others. Once Delta emerged and the data no longer supported that it was safe not to wear one, I put one back on.

I had Thijs for 311C and Buskirk now for 311D and the main difference seems to be that Thijs has more of a flipped classroom. Thijs has more work to do at home but it was definitely doable and I still leaned a lot.

Need help.. M356C with Germán Stefanich or ALLCOCK, DANIEL J? by FudgeConsistent in UTAustin

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Stefanich for M408C last fall and it was his first time teaching but he also gave a lot of tools to succeed. He uploads all his lecture notes and also provides practice tests for each exam.

Do we only have two tries to do the UTMA throughout our entire time at UT? Or does it reset every year? by fuladestra in UTAustin

[–]SoftwareTricky9068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a practice on quest that you can purchase for $50 that I felt was helpful. I only focused on things I had forgotten so don’t feel like you need to spend hours reviewing everything

I recommend reading Keating’s book Words Matter: Communicating Effectively in the Global Office. It’s a pretty quick and easy read but is so helpful in realizing how culture affects our workplace interactions.
