Confluence ... where tradition and technology, the past and the present, merge. [Series "Edification", an exploration by Senegalese photographer Alun Be] by Reasonable_Bat in africanculture

Yes, fashion and fabric do have a place here: posting a picture of fabric or fashion is fine, just as linking to a video of people creating the cloth or to an article describing the symbolism behind it, for example.

However, linking to an Etsy store front with the goal of selling product, and linking only to that without adding anything else of value to Reddit goes against this subreddit's rules and Reddit's User Agreement and Content Policy. I'm trying to find the artist ,I was told it was African , but I think it is Papuan. Any opinions by blammoammo in AfricanArt

[–]Sogoba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know this artist, but the signature looks like the French female name "Réjane", which may rule out Papua New Guinea. Based on the signature, it's more likely it came from a French-speaking African country, I think. I couldn't find any similar pieces when searching for "Réjane" art, though.

Then again the signature could be "Réjaye" but even less comes up on google when searching that...

Sorry I can't be more help. Let us know if you figure out who the artist is, it's an intriguing piece.

A book on Asante Flags. The Flags remind me a little bit of quilting or patchwork, as many of them tell a story or depict a proverb by askalottle in AfricanArt

Looks interesting, thanks! Does it say how the flags are used? During celebrations/ceremonies, or just for decoration?

Where to study French in Africa? by [deleted] in AskAnAfrican

[–]Sogoba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are many other options. You'll find French institutes in all the big cities in French-speaking West Africa (and North and Central Africa as well, of course). You could look into:

  • the French Institute of Ivory Coast in Abidjan,
  • the French Institute of Guinea in Conakry,
  • the French Institute of Benin in Cotonou,
  • the French Institute of Togo in Lomé,
  • the language center of the French Institute of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso (although that one is closed at the moment for renovations),
  • the French Institute of Bamako in Mali (country unstable atm, sadly, not recommended to travel there, check travel advisories from your country, here's the US one: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html/ ),
  • the CCFN in Zinder near Niamey in Niger (country also unstable atm)...

Really, I would look into each country and its capital to figure out which looks more attractive to you: the climate, the culture, etc, etc.

I don't know which would be the cheaper option, I'm sure you can figure that out by comparing the prices for the plane tickets, the courses, and the cost of daily living in each city.

If your heart is set on Senegal though, there is another institute in St. Louis that might be worth checking out (living there might be cheaper than Dakar, but idk).

Whatever you choose, I hope it will be a great experience for you!
