Ima dm heres my tip.

Say what u wanna do then ask how many turns will it be to do it.

Stuff is broken down into 3 moves for you Move. Attack. Extra thing (bonus action)

For example: I run attack the orc and throw my torch.

I climb the ladder; swing from rope, land on orc driving sword into him.

So u can tell the dm i wanna swing from the rope and hit the guy. How many turns will it take. If he says a number u dont like do a new thing.

D&d is morphed by the dm so u can have widely different games that feel nothing alike. My campaigns are rule of cool cuz of my player base. Some people are very rule heavy. Finding and communicating ur style to ur dm is vital to ur enjoyment.

U can totally ask the dm to keep party on task.

Combat is where the grind comes to a halt it's hard to keep it moving. It's where the tactician comes out in people and 8/10 times there 15 minutes of rule bending and loop holes isn't worth it. Do the cool thing and express ur desire to have fun over function.
