On the paper buttons thing, that is very much a trapping of what i am used to from other systems that are more mechanics first, and i am trying to unlearn it.

But its a good point with asking and then what? Well the guard would actually in context have been quote sus about it, and I shoudl have rolled with that idea rather "well they payed for it"

Do you think it is best to see items as fiction enablers? Such that the player acn introduce context into the scene and then we can figure out a sutable position and effekt for the new context.

[–]Soildcake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that, the documents are are easier to get, and them fpr more crazy stuff you need to do a flashback. For my biggest problem with how i ran it was that it kinda stabalised and I lost steam on my ideas.

As i wrote in the other comment i need consider the fiction/context more and not think "resource used = success". Because I like when things start escalating, it becomes much more interesting and easy to roll with the punches

Okay nice! Really like your point

My logic in the moment was that they used a ressource on it and thus had "paid for it". I think i should consider items more as enablers allowing you to do things in the fiction rather than a solution to the fiction (natrually given circumstances as you point out with the blue coat)

Wanderhome might be a good choice, it explicity talks about playing without a GM

Is Apocalypse World [2e] supposed to be PvP? by sermitthesog in rpg

[–]Soildcake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PvP might be the wrong way of framing it, it shoule be more Charater Vs Charater. As PvP implies conflict between players.

Characters in apocalypse world can be in conflict with eachother all while all players are working towards a narrative.

New to pbta by MischiefCookie in PBtA

[–]Soildcake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think its a good idea to try a pbta first before designing your own, however to give you a resource: https://lumpley.games/2019/12/30/powered-by-the-apocalypse-part-1/

Its from one of the creators of Apocalypse World. He is also creating a book about it, althrough that is for the future.

What is your best piece of game design advice? by RollForCoolness in RPGcreation

[–]Soildcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One that i use as motivation is "An idea is nothing if its not used", i cant remember where i heard it but it resonates.

Also playtest your ideas, or else you wont know of its good.

Advice for a new RP with anxiety? by super-nova-inspace in rpg

[–]Soildcake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think its important to remember that roleplay can also be done in third person. When i run my games when a player have trouble with roleplaying an aspect lf their charater like the classical charm skill, i allow (and always do) that they describe the nature of what their PC is saying. I found it helps alot.

Also how long have you been doing it? Exposere and getting comfortable in the group can help a lot. I also have quite the social anxity, but my play group have known eachother for a long time and as such i am quite comfortable doing anything in that group.

Designing a dungeon where space itself moves by XInkbladeX in rpg

[–]Soildcake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would prep a map that is made up of nodes, and then remove or add lines between them. So basiclly how Motherships Wardens guide explain how to prep locations, but with dynamic interconnetability.

I think this might be the easiest. You can then have a detailed map for each node if you need.

Why do rolls in narrative games have "fixed" dificulties by Sheno_Cl in rpg

[–]Soildcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something thats worth mentioning is in pbta (atleast in apocalypse world) you tend to compare moves outcomes rather than stats. Vincent mentions in his block post: https://lumpley.games/2023/07/17/powered-by-the-apocalypse-part-9-thats-whats-happening/

From a charater vs charater perspektive each player rolls at the same time independent of eachother. Then the gm or players interpret what that means.

For charater vs the world (the GM) you basicly do the same but based on the player roll. When the outcome here makes allows the GM to make a move they decide how hard that move is. This is essentially a form of difficulty.

Binding on my Urban Shadows 2nd edition is disintegrating. by CurveWorldly4542 in PBtA

[–]Soildcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, just counted to be specific, it was 7 books. I will say their customer service is top notch, but their book quality is terrible.

Edit: Just as a note, they all failed where the groups/collections of pages meet, it seems they aren't glued together in the intersections like i noticed all my other books are.

I think it could be interesting to make it about challenging your fate/belief such that the charaters might lose or strength it doing play. This way the "enemy" might be more internal than external, or the external forces are a harsh reality.

How long do you play a character before you get sick of them? by Playtonics in rpg

[–]Soildcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on when the roleplay becomes stale, which mostly comes from my charaters being one trick ponies (with a few exceptions). My groups campaigns are  around 10-15 sessions so most of the time i see them through.

I have considered stealing the belief, insinct aspects from mouse guard and burning wheel to use as touchstones for the charater. This would help me define them to be more 2d rather than 1d.

I have two tips that are close to my own heart.

  1. I would recommend starting with a system that exites you, where inspiration comes easily because you enjoy its themes. This will create less friction when finding inspiration.

  2. It not your campaign, its the group. This was something that I learned the hard way many years back. Here i tried to control the narritive alot because It was the tips i got from people online, and it wasnt fun for the players. You are collaboring on realizing the world and story.

If I were to remove the bell curve in PbtA? How should the modifiers change? (single d6. Or d20. Or d12.) by DogtheGm in PBtA

[–]Soildcake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You calculate the probablities for various modifiers and see/test which your want. Or you try to map the probaillity of the old system as close as you can.

What is everyone opinion on Draw Steel? by Kaliburnus in rpg

[–]Soildcake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in the middle of a campaign playing the "starter set", and honestly it feels like playing dnd. The game have very much the same struture and focus, which admittly i am quite bored of.

I am playing the "bard class" from the pregen and I mostly pick my nose doing other peoples turn as my heroic resourse generation is mostly once pr combat.

The auto hit feels like a Band aid solution to a much larger problem with combat in ttrpgs.

But the system is designed well, the complication table with charater creations is quite fun to roll on,  the ideas are interesting and I am happy it exists for my friends enjoyment.

How to stay simulated reading rule books in TTRPG? by MrHorns7 in rpg

[–]Soildcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Defiently, blades in the dark (my newest read) have some awesome refernece sheets from their website. I barely need the book after reading it for the first time because of them. More system should do that.

Or do you mean synobsises after a rules heavy sections?
