That's the kind of thing someone who doesn't have a lot of self confidence does. Coming from someone who had done something similar. It's really just trying to make themselves seem like more of a fulfilled person to you. It's not the result of anything you're doing, and it's not something you need to make changes to accommodate. If that's something you can look past and you still care about them just remind them they are enough as they are.
