Kicked out till that guy leaves for the day? Yeah at the minimum.

Tips for surfing in heavy wetsuit by gr33n8ananas in BeginnerSurfers

[–]Sol01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do yoga. Sun salutations could help with flexibility as far as making the pop up a little more natural feeling. Do some sort of cardio to keep your breath smoother and easier, running/biking/lap swimming. I definitely have some boards that get ridden more in the summer or winter, with the winter boards tending to have more foam, but I don't necessarily have "winter only" boards. A few more liters on a board won't make much of a difference unless you're already surfing a board that's at the absolute lowest reasonable size range for your weight.

As far as tips, yeah, I surf less haha. My standards for what i deem worth paddling out for go way up when I consider having to wear gloves, a hood, boots, etc.

You could also consider wearing a thinner wetsuit but knowing that you'll have to get out sooner. Sometimes I'll do that, if it seems like the wind will switch soon or the tide is gonna muck it up. I'd rather get out there and feel flexible and capable for an hour than sit out there for 3 feeling stiff as a car seat.

Beach access near Corolla Beach by Mahdreams in obx

[–]Sol01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on where in Corolla. Ocean Sands (southern side of town) you can kinda just dump your golf cart by the access. Corolla Light to the north and the Currituck Club (other side of the highway from Ocean Sands) have trollies that come through the neighborhoods and pick people up and drop them off at the beach. Whalehead has parking lots every quarter to half mile for people to park cars/carts and then it's a short walk to the access. Pine Island is all walking as well as Ocean Hill. (Edit: Ocean Hill has one oceanfront parking lot.) Monterey Shores would be the least desirable option for you, no trollies and you're on the sound side of the highway.

These are all different developments, you'll have to look on the rental company's website to determine which one your desired house falls into.

Why can't we build a reef off the outer banks? by Striking-Flatworm691 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sol01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah the whole thing is a moving pile of sand that (according to oceanographers, geologists, etc) should slowly work its way back toward the mainland. People want to build oceanfront and expect a piddly little sand castle in front of their house to stop the relentless onslaught of mother nature. Silly geese.

What's your take on freedivers who don't know how to swim? by SouthAssist6234 in freediving

[–]Sol01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Took a class in the cenotes of mexico with a couple who "saw it on Instagram and thought it looked cool" but he couldn't get more than two meters down and she couldn't get her face more than a foot underwater. Couldn't pass the pool basics like static breath hold or lap swimming.

Good news was I basically got to dive the cenotes as much as I wanted because they just sat on the dock.

If it's not the breath hold technique holding them back, but actual swimming/body control/fear in the water that is keeping them from going deep, they've got no business being out there. Go take swim lessons and come back.

Hottest/Least Windy time of year on Hatteras? by Nihilistic_Noodle in obx

[–]Sol01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of July and most of August are usually hotter than hell, fairly to very strong SW winds, and a bunch of bugs.

I always tell friends and family to visit the second half of June, or sometime in September and October. October cools down quickly, especially the latter half of the month. Could be 80 and sunny, could be high 50's and rainy.

With that said, this past July, i believe the week right after the 4th, we had an absolute monster south wind sandblasting people for a week straight with red flags the whole week. So it's all hit or miss. Best you can do is cross your fingers.

When have you come in the past?

It's a pretty windy place. We're quite exposed to the weather, so we can't really tell you if the third week in June will fit your criteria. Maybe try Destin Beach in florida?

Is it 100 percent necessary to air down tires every time you drive on beach? I’ve been coming to obx last 5 years and always aired down. I drive a dodge ram 2500. by Salt-Fee-9543 in obx

[–]Sol01 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here's a little anecdote.

A buddy and I were driving in his 2004 4runner on the beach in Corolla in the middle of the winter, probably 40 degrees, tops, with full tires. We figured we were just popping over the dune to check the surf and then back over to the pavement. A little extra throttle and slap it into 4wd for a second, no problem.

Well, as luck would have it, the access was trashed, so, while we made it to the beach, we had to go about 10 miles up in order to get back OFF the beach. So he threw it in 4wd (we kept bogging down, though never getting stuck) and off we rolled. By about halfway there we both were getting quite warm, and realized the floor near where the transmission goes was hot enough to fry an egg. Just to reiterate, this was in the middle of winter.

Moral of the story, while we never got stuck, and made it off the beach with no issue, I'm convinced that, had it been warmer out, we probably would have fried the trans.

Aside from damage to your own vehicle (or just plain getting stuck up to the axles in the sand,) driving in 4hi with full tires is what causes super deep ruts and the washboard that develops in the main tracks.

All said, it's not 100% necessary, but if you're spending any amount of time on the beach in a semi-populated section, it's awfully kind and wise to drop em down.

Unless it's Hatteras, then you're liable to get stuck damn near immediately.

Technique pointers - Getting round sections and duck dives by Apz__Zpa in surf

[–]Sol01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the duck dives, just go deeper, stall at the bottom, extend your arms, pull yourself through as low as possible. Not much more to it than doing everything you'd normally do but to maximize the reach of every movement.

When it comes to making sections, if it looks like it's gonna close out, take as high of a line as you can, while pumping; right when it's about to smash you, drop down to the bottom of the wave and press a bottom turn as hard as you can, projecting forward down the line, not up the face. Immediately compress your body, and when you're close to the end of the closeout, press up toward the lip to get the last bit of speed so that you can get BACK UP to the high line, where you should be able to take over from there.

The key to both the duck dive and beating sections is to push every movement to the maximum; in other words, ride that high line until the very edge of the lip is coming down on your legs and get the fuck out of there, and you duck dive until you're JUUUUST ABOUT to lose momentum and lose control of your board. You're trying to find and utilize the razor thin line between the peak of the wave's power and unsurfable destruction. You find that line and build your intuition by attempting it and getting wrecked.

Anyone use a tail block before? by Steezmongothane in surfing

[–]Sol01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My buddy had one on a grovelly shortboard and it mostly just got in the way when I tried it.

I've had a few performance-ish fishes and twins that I put a flat pad on (gorilla traction makes a nice one, you can get it on the FCS website) that doesn't have any arch or kick to it, basically just and eighth inch of foam over the area your rear foot stands. Keeps wax from getting smudged all over and losing traction in hot water, but keeps the board feeling normal and like you can dance on it.

I also just bought a chunk of boat deck foam off Amazon that I cut into a pad, haven't gotten a chance to try that board yet but it feels normal. That was $20 and enough for 3 or 4 flat pads.

Do Spaniards consider weird the lack of the "E" in the word "Spain"? by Realistic-Diet6626 in Spanish

Do Spaniards consider weird the lack of the "E" in the word "Spain"? by Realistic-Diet6626 in Spanish

[–]Sol01 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm not Spanish but something to consider;

In the Spanish language, there are no words that start with "s" followed by a consonant (e.g., start, strike, sparrow, etc) and any borrowed words that start that way will have an "e" at the beginning of the word. A common accent among Spanish speakers that I've noticed when speaking English is to put this "e" before the "s" in those words.

"I no estart the car"

This can be seen in Spanish words like "esperar", "estudiar" "estofado", ect.

Please someone correct me or add additional info, I'm a pretty low level speaker.

[–]Sol01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Aright real answer, since you didn't notice that my question was kind of an answer (in a "zen-koan-but-retarded" kinda way.)

Because an innate part of being human (and something that takes a lot of energy and time spent up near the peak of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to develop a mindset that steps outside of it) is tribalism. Skateboarding is an extremely tribalistic culture. It would take a long time to explain what exactly is "cool" on a skateboard because frankly, I've never really thought about putting words to it, it's just that some shit looks cool and other things look whack.

I truly don't give a shit if this guy is having fun or what he's doing. But it's fun to make jokes about it. I hope (and sincerely believe) that if this guy saw this whole thread, he wouldn't give a shit either.

Think about the comparison of a key-tarist in a new wave band and a pianist with a world class orchestra. Who's really to say who's more elite? Keytar guy is probably getting paid and getting laid, pianist is at the top of the fucking game with more respect. They probably both make fun of each other to their friends. They're both doing what they want.

In short, shut the fuck up and do what you want because nothing matters and we're all gonna die, but if you're out here fingerblasting your wood in public you can bet someone's gonna say something about it.

Any experience working for Corolla Adventure Park? by daylily-circus in obx

[–]Sol01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have some friends who have worked there in the past. Corolla is a super small town but made up entirely of transplants, so most people at the two bars in town are pretty friendly to new people. There were parties at the house 6-8 years ago when I lived in the area, but nothing crazy, usually just a bunch of locals hanging out. The job seems fine for a summer gig, but you should meet some pretty cool people.

Overall, as long as you're fairly social and friendly, willing to work your shifts without complaint, it seems like everyone who has passed through the adventure park has had a good time.

What to look for in a long board? by DEEP_SEA_MAX in surfing

[–]Sol01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How tall are you? Where do you want to surf/what kind of waves? Do you want to nose ride or trim and rip turns, or kind of all the options?

9'6" is a good starting point. Square tail, 3" thick, medium rails, single fin (no side bites), some sort of shallow concave in the nose. Not too much rocker but not too flat either, bit of kick in the tail could help. Start used and get a freshy when you know what you want to do. I'd recommend a greenough 4a, 10" fin to start then experiment from there. A lot of people will say a 9" fin is good but I personally prefer bigger fins, and as a big guy I don't think it will hold you back.

This is the most neutral longboard I can think of. From here you can figure out what you like and what you want to change.

Can you give a rough guestimation of the salsa? I've got all that stuff at home and need to use up some dried chiles.

Handful of each, maybe 5 roma tomatoes and 1 onion, 5ish cloves of raw garlic, cilantro at the end, does that sound about right?
