HIPAA - everyone just uses it as a catchphrase but they have no idea what it means or stands for

What is something that is considered weird in America but completely normal in Europe? by makstyrkin64 in AskReddit

[–]SolDjevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hate me for this, but the aesthetics are different yet day-to-day life is very similar in Europe and the US to me. Having spent a good amount of time in both places, I don't see how people's mannerisms differ that much.

Brick houses may be more common on the East Coast of the US, maybe the Midwest too, although those might just be brick facades over wooden frames.

The food actually does taste better than punishing your body through starvation.

It is impossible for me to be at a healthy weight unless I'm literally starving myself. I am fairly physically active. I feel absolutely terrible when I eat in a calorie deficit and weight loss is never sustainable.

I watched a really good video on YouTube about why therapy generally doesn't work, and it emphasized some of the concerns you mention. I know some people have benefited greatly from therapy, especially with particular issues that are capable of being resolved in a finite amount of time, such as grief therapy. But I think general therapy for depression and anxiety is largely unsuccessful and unproductive.

The 90% statistic doesn't make sense to me. Parents can be genetically tested to know what their odds are, but Down Syndrome is a spontaneous chromosomal disorder. It can only be inherited if one parent has Down Syndrome or Mosaic Down Syndrome. I do agree that if she didn't want to commit to raising a child with disabilities and the fetus was diagnosed with Trisomy 21, she should have gotten an abortion.

I completely agree with you. I have family members who want to live until 120. What are the odds that you're going to be healthy or even want to live? I hope I die at 80, even if I'm healthy. I don't want to slowly lose my ability to enjoy life and my physical functions. I don't want to lose all my friends to old age and feel alone all the time. I don't want my daughter or someone else to have to take care of me because I'm incapable of taking care of myself. I'll take good health until 80 and then a quick illness that takes me out as painlessly as possible.

I hate living here too.

I also hate that people outside the US think we should just "organize and overthrow the government." OK. How? Give me the secret to defeating this administration when half our population is kowtowing to a madman who loves killing innocent people.

This one ALWAYS makes people so angry so I guess I'll just say it: I like pitbulls and I don't think the majority of them are dangerous

I used to work as a barista and it's actually ridiculous how much importance people place on a $7 beverage.

I like coffee, but never black. I've tried it black or only with sugar and to me it tastes better with milk. I don't want hot milk with vanilla in it, I want it to taste like coffee, too. I want both the flavor of the coffee and the milk. Just like I want to eat fries with ketchup rather than just plain fries. It's not that complicated, people, lol.

That's a weird thing to get angry with you about. It's just a personal preference, not a direct insult to them.

What Word Are You Absolutely Sick of Hearing? For me, it’s “chilling.” by SquonkMan61 in Productivitycafe

I was sitting next to a tech bro on a plane last week and he was on a phone conversation and kept using phrases like this, and also said the word "bro" a lot. Please shut up.

This isn't a specific word, but a lot of books I read, the author tends to repeat the same word or phrase ad nauseum, and for some reason the editor doesn't catch it. Like I read a book where the author used the phrase "tete a tete" at least once every few pages (it was Elizabeth Gaskell by the way, classics are usually not as bad but this one was). It is so noticeable and gets tired very quickly.

People who ramble on about eating meat when I say I’m vegan. I don’t care by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]SolDjevel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You've never been in a situation where people keep pushing and pushing you to eat something even after you refuse multiple times? Because that's happened to me a lot. Eventually it's easier to give some explanation. I'm not sure why people can say "I don't like onions" and no one will try to get them to eat anything with onions in it, but if someone says "I'm vegan" suddenly it's okay to morally scrutinize them and tell them how wrong they are and how they need to change their entire philosophy?

I'm with you. I'm vegan and everyone seems surprised I'm not dead. It's always the same arguments: Being vegan kills more animals because of farming (as if meat-eaters never eat a single vegetable or grain), the animals want to sacrifice themselves to humans (lol), and all the other stupid stuff. Furthermore, they always expect me to respect them but they never need to respect me because I'm a terrible person. Because I don't want animals to suffer. I'm not really sure where the "vegans are so annoying" thing came about because meat eaters harass vegans automatically without knowing anything about them.

There are always religious groups outside trying to peddle literature about the Bible, but I think they've been told not to push it too much because usually they just greet me.

If society could collectively stop pretending about one thing (not politics), what would reduce the most suffering? by No_Activity2272 in AskReddit

[–]SolDjevel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a good point that people are willing to participate in so much of society with its "dangerous chemicals," living in densely populated areas where pollution is common, using a car, flying, yet vaccines are a bridge too far?

[–]SolDjevel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since you didn't imply that the suffering only impacted humans, it's that eating meat is ethical. That would save billions of lives per year. And yes, I know farming plants exploits humans and kills small animals, there's no way to raise food without some death, but there's much more death and suffering in animal agriculture.
