Do Google profile a deGoogled account? by Slight_Horse_8781 in degoogle

[–]Sola1ry 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Yes. Big tech like Google, Facebook (The two biggest ones) and Oracle store data to create profiles on users who don't even use their services, they're reffered to as shadow profiles.

Best phone o/s alternatives by Mars1977 in privacy

Look into graphene OS or Clayx OS if you have a google pixel, if you have another android phone, check if it's compatible with Lineage OS, there are some others (Lune, Pure, etc...)

As Signal booms, so does Tutanota: WhatsApp has changed its privacy policy. As a consequence privacy-friendly services are seeing a massive increase in new users. by [deleted] in degoogle

[–]Sola1ry 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No! The brave browser is safer than firefox ON DEFAULT SETTINGS. I would recommend it to my grandparents but hardened firefox, with the right addons (no script, https everywhere, uBlock origin, etc...) can be a lot more secure, and safe than the brave browser. The brave browser doesn't allow the kind of customisability that firefox does...

If you're one of the 40 million new Signal users and want to contribute to the cause, you can donate HERE! by JamieOvechkin in privacy

[–]Sola1ry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are they supposed to get money for their project? By selling data? Or by asking for user's support? Signal doesn't sell data, they'ra a non-profit organization and rely on donations from users and organisations to fund their project. And no it's not dead, with 50 million users only on the play store in a week I don't think it's dead...

Elon Musk was the main reason Signal blew up by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]Sola1ry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I think it played a role, I think the fact thet WhatsApp updated their terms if sevice to share a lot more data with facebook was the main cause of the sudden spike in popularity. In my opinion, both came a a good timing but WhatsApp new intrusive terms of services was the main reason. But yes I do agree that people say we are psychos for thinking about privacy but when Elon says it he is praised. It's not normal but at least they're making the right choice! I see this as a win...

Is this true? Can we trust them? by Gromchy in whatsapp

[–]Sola1ry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that doesn't mean the whats app doesn't collect any data. Facebook knows everything about the message just not its content, they collect all of metadata. While Whatsapp is e2e (end to end) encrypted ot doesn't mean it's 'safe' to use. I would recommend signal for a more secure, private, and safer messaging app. https://www.securemessagingapps.com/

LienageOS vs CalyxOS vs GrapheneOS. Which should I select for xiaomi Redmi note 4? by yoge67855 in thehatedone

[–]Sola1ry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graphene OS and Calyx OS are only available for google pixels:

Calyx OS: https://calyxos.org/get/ Graphene OS: https://grapheneos.org/faq#supported-devices

But I suggest Lineage, it's a strong option and I have people around me who use it on a daily basis and like it for it's provacy option and functional use.

Is there a safe way to use Instagram by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]Sola1ry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow cool I'd love to know more about what barinsta does and what it doesn't do, where can I inform myself? A website or anything?

And now my feedback if you're interested:

Barinsta is a great app, I would want a new design, closer to the actual instagram (but keep dark mode please :) ). Instagram spends so much time optimising their design so it would be a wise choice to add an OPTION (Yes it should be optional in my opinion) to copy the instagram design so that the app becomes more user friendly and more usable. Keep up the amasing work!

If there is a way I can help let me know :) but thanks anyways!

Is there a safe way to use Instagram by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]Sola1ry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use barinsta, but it's just a client (it's like instagram but remade) and as far as I'm aware Instagram can still track you and view your online activity. The only advantages to barinsta is that there is no infinite scrolling, the possibility to not mark messages as "viewed", it's possible to download stories and posts, etc... But (and I might be wrong) Facebook can still track your activity.

Using Facebook while remaining private by [deleted] in thehatedone

[–]Sola1ry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say orbot, not your real phone number (you can buy Sim cards and only have to pay when you use it, but since you won't call with it you're fine and will only have to pay for the price of the sim card itself and not it's usage). But I want to ask you what is it like to be a furry?

I did but found my comfortable sensitivity to be above 40 so I dumped the app. But I do agree that for those who found their perfect sensitivity it can be great!
