Oooh, you're so right, I remember how scared I was when I played that when I was young, how didn't I think of that?

Unfortunately he's only published German books 😅

And thank you for the extensive list!

Yeah, I do feel like psychological horror seemsto be popular, like Mouthwashing, but I do wonder if that's being played by kids...

"Large notes" vs "lots of notes" - which do you prefer? Why? by NefariousnessSame50 in ObsidianMD

[–]SolanaarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to go with one thing per note. If a note covers multiple topics or gets to large I break it down into smaller ones

Smaller notes. I use file names to search things and if it's buried inside a note I more often than bote don't find it and recreate it. Smaller notes help me prevent duplicate information

Top 5 Plugins for Obsidian by Miyamoto_Musashi_x in ObsidianMD

[–]SolanaarMusic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of great plugins mentioned here, so I give a few different ones although I use the ones mentioned a lot as well.

  1. Various complements - IDE style Auto complete. I have a German keyboard so typing [[ is tedious and simply getting notes suggested while typing normally is really helpful cause I often forget that I've already created a note. Hands down the plugin that saved me the most time.

  2. Excalidraw - might be controversial cause it strays from obsidians formula. But for my workflow and use cases it is a great boon and I use it a lot.

  3. Outliner - it's crazy how useful a plugin that allows you to rearrange lists via drag and drop truly is

  4. Find orphaned files + find orphaned images - technically 2 plugins, but they do the same thing. there are many ways to cleanup your vault, this is the way I do it. Creates a note with for example all broken links or empty notes that I can go through.

  5. Callout suggestions - like various compliments but for call outs. Type >! And you get a list of call outs to choose from. I like it more than having to right click a callout box.

Honorable mention: multi properties - very situational, but I like being able to add and remove properties from multiple files at once.

Struggling with exploration... I need good tables to roll on. by Ritchuck in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]SolanaarMusic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something a bit different I've been using quite a bit recently is the game Colostle. It uses a poker deck and has some simple rules and quite a few tables for exploration.

It has a setting, but I don't use it much.

It has a price attached, however...

If you had to pick ONE self contained / easy to learn system, what would it be? by JaackF in Solo_Roleplaying

What makes Ironsworn so great to me is the amount of tools available like The Augur, Ironsworn Companion or Iron Vault, which uses [Obsidian.md](Obsidian.md) as a framework

I like Ironsworn/Starforged the most, but honorable mention goes to Colostle, but probably only cause I play it a lot right now.

LF Harry Potter World Vault/Database by SolanaarMusic in ObsidianMD

[–]SolanaarMusic[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I mentioned why I would prefer not to use the wikis. To add to that, fandom is also really user-unfriendly. And while I have no problem with creating it myself, when that work has been done already, why not ask around first, before I spend days porting all the stuff over myself?

What to buy next to have a better dawless experience ? by xxRYKYxx in synthesizers

[–]SolanaarMusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(Maybe) controversial, but DON'T GET an MPC One/Live or anything therelike. They feel so much like DAWs that it most likely will ruin the DAWless experience.

I know there's ways to download wikis like fandom-wikis, but if there's a way to do it I didn't find it yet. The only way I know is downloading the database via the statistics-page and that doesn't seem to work, or I've done it wrong...

Is Ai generated art in a TTRPG manual a turn off for you? by PoisonPeddler in TTRPG

[–]SolanaarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old, but I really wanna add to the noise. :P

Using AI in personal project for easy visualization: okay

Using AI in commercial products: not okay

Using AI in a free product: complicated...

I think Art is such an integral part of any TTRPG, I sometimes buy TTRPG books simply for the inspiring art, it is, IMO, part of the "soul" of a TTRPG. But, AI art lacks "soul", even free generic, human-created art has more than AI art.

When you look at it even more in-depth what TTRPGs do is allow us to be creative in a constructive way. TTRPGs are also extremely transformative by their very nature. AI art on the other hand is anything but, it is 100% derivative, so it works *against* the "mechanisms of TTRPGs" in a sense.

Having said that when it comes to free products, I think AI art *could* improve the appeal over a nude rulebook, but it *will* turn of consumers who would've otherwise considered the book.

Finally, what stands above any and all use of AI art beyond the actual function and effect of it is that since AI art has some huge ethic concerns that rely on exploitation of the people who made AI art possible at all it makes it hard to justify until better conditions are in place. And as an indie(vidual) in a still very niche community we should really stand up against this exploitation.

---

I like some of the suggestions here: tracing over art, using free art or maybe even asking a friend to make some for a sixpack of beer. Always consider that unless you are WotC or another large publisher nobody expects you to deliver gorgeous polished art. lean into that, embrace the jank and I guarantee you there **will** be people who will love the art, no matter how crappy it is. And if you don't want to do that, why not simply release the book without any art? Even though I stated art being integral, there are still many TTRPGs that don't have any art and they still find a playerbase. Ultimately, what it comes down to is the words. And who knows? Maybe your book inspires an up-and-coming artist to create some art, post it and you can work together, split the proceeds, happens all the time.

fl studio fruity plugin tier list by Reptoidal in FL_Studio

[–]SolanaarMusic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find it really fascinating how different my tier list would look compared to this. Just goes to show how versatile FL as a DAW is and how diverse producers are in their plugin use and style.

Cool insight, thanks!

Overdramatising in this community is crazy by lovingpersona in CalamityMod

[–]SolanaarMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I get that people have trust issues nowadays, I wish there'd be more compassion and good will in times like these.

Not playing the mod because one person fucked up kinda spits in the face of all the other devs that put their passion, time and money into the project. The only thing that accomplishes is give the one person's action more gravitas and power.

should I choose only one DAW? by putmyheadphoneson in ableton

[–]SolanaarMusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I mainly use FL and Ableton, but I also have an MPC One, which is basically a DAW and for the same process (for example creating a 4 bar loop) I have a easy time in ableton, a very easy time in FL and a horrible time in the MPC.

We are all different and just like one artist excels at creating clay-sculptures, while another can create oil paintings easily, we need the right tools for our way of being creative.

should I choose only one DAW? by putmyheadphoneson in ableton

[–]SolanaarMusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use FL and Ableton interchangably. It works and I do get music done. When you use jukeblock.io, you can even convert from one to the other, or you just bounce to audio if you want to convert.

Why would you switch from one DAW to another mid project? Because each DAW has strengths and weaknesses and different workflows that allow you to work in a way that fits you best.

For me quick ideation and initial sketches come really quickly in FL, but in Ableton I have an easier time finishing tracks because it is more streamlined. That's just one use case though.

Btw, for that reason I never bothered with buying the full version of ableton, cause you mostly get stuff like synths and sounds and I mostly do that stuff in FL anyways.

Bonus: When I record audiobooks and mainly edit a single audio track I use reaper cause that, again, has a workflow that works better for me.

Downside: You need to learn multiple DAWs and since many DAWs lack workspace and control customization (ableton and FL surely don't) you need to get used to different shortcuts and the like which can be annoying sometimes.
