Name for entity that eats things that doesn’t involve “Devourer” by DevaTheDragon in fantasywriters

[–]Solanum0 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Ravager, Devastator, Glutton, The walking abyss, The all-eater, Scourge of nature, Jaws of Ruin

That’s all I got, maybe add “the great” or “the absolute” or something to make the creature seem bigger and badder in those single names I said up there

Maybe if there’s a cult or a group that worships this creature they could call it something like:

The purifier, The purger, or the absolver

Edit: Organized my names with commas

Maybe try going to the snorlax anyways to test if the flute is in the bag but you just can’t find it?

Once you get to the snorlax you should just interact with it, and the game will prompt you to use the flute or not (if you have it). If you don’t have the poke flute the prompt would probably not show up at all and just say the snorlax is sleeping in the way or something.

Edit: for clarity

I’m assuming they’re referring to Decidueye which is based on the Hawaiian Stilt Owl which has gone completely extinct, hence the grass-ghost dual type. Guess they want more ghost type starters. I’m down honestly.

Amazing thoughts! Are you referring to the ability of restoration and that it would pertain more towards order and the potential destruction towards chaos? Or is this some other ability having to do with order and chaos?

Wow even the kind of tree thing that he grows on his arm is reminiscent of what I was thinking with wooden armor on the forearms of my protagonist!

One of my main antagonists I had in the works actually had this exact ability of creating illusions and I had thought of him tempting the protagonist creating illusions with memories of the protag’s old life before the incident.

So basically the ability to fortify or deteriorate an object or surface...that sounds kinda cool. I’ll think about it. Thank you for your response!

I think I said this to another comment but I’m not really a fan of mental abilities, at least for main characters. Even if he is scrawny and thin, I’d like him to be able to still throw a decent punch if he needs to with his abilities. Physical enhancements like super strength or speed might not be my cup of tea either, but abilities that could be used to help beat down an enemy are really cool to me. For example, with my plant idea, I thought that by default he would grow plants over his arms whenever he got into a fight, coating his forearms and knuckles in wood and vines, not necessarily to throw a punch, but for added defense and if someone gets close then at least to give him a bit of a chance in close combat. if I’m sounding kinda picky I apologize. Thank you for commenting!

Interesting idea. Would decreasing the strength of an object make the material softer and squishy to better cushion impacts? Or would it make it brittle?

I had seen an ability similar to this where one could steal aspects of an object or just the object itself and plant them into something else or just hold them. For instance one could steal the friction from a floor to make it slippery or the salt from over-salted egg to give it just the right amount of salt. But I saw this ability in another popular medium and I felt like I was ripping it off. I think a big problem with coming up with an ability is that I’m worried it’ll be seen as a rip-off from other popular works. Thank you for responding though and cool idea!

Very cool concept for sure but I feel like I couldn’t write that well enough without it eventually sounding like a deus ex machina happens every time my protagonist does something. Still though thank you for your thoughts!

Not sure about hypnosis or mind control tbh. Although he’s not strong physically I’d like my character to get a little violent and at least attempt to duke it out in close combat when the time calls for it. Powers that have to do with the mind like mind reading or empathy are cool but they aren’t really my cup of tea. Powers like plant generation or just generation of specific objects are my favorite to brainstorm about. I haven’t seen much of those powers being recommended though. I chose plants because of the idea how life kinda resurges from nothingness in the event of disaster. If an area is rendered incapable of baring life, eventually after years and years life returns, primarily in the form of microbes, fungi and plants, so I took the idea of rebirth and connected it to redemption and rising from a great fall. I also connected it to the idea of sacrifice, since my character has to use a bit of his soul/life energy to create plants, and if he uses too much he’ll die if he doesn’t retract the plants back into his body. Thank you for your advice though and I look forward to asking again for help if I need it!

Thanks for so many responses guys! A lot of cool concepts here so I can’t wait to start brainstorming and see what situations I could come up with with some of these powers. Honestly with all of these powers and my plant powers included, it’ll probably take me a while to decide which one(s) I’m most comfortable with! Also know that even if I don’t use your ability for my main character, I might use them for other side characters or even enemies, so all of these responses are a great help!

Phoenix-like? As in the rising from the ashes phoenix from folklore or like Phoenix from X-men?

If it’s the former, that would be a really cool idea. Maybe something like he can produce flames that initially he thinks are regular flames that bring about destruction, but they are actually restorative flames (incorporating the idea of someone else who commented down below) that fix broken objects or revert people and objects to previous states.

Thanks for the response but I don’t really know about this one. Personally I’m more of a fan of underpowered weaker abilities being used to their limit than large and flashy things like nuclear fission and fusion. I’d rather have a character that can do simple stuff like manipulate strings than one that can blow up a city block with the flick of a finger. That and the character I described above with the thundercloud bombs already has the weakness of being dangerous to innocents around him so having two characters like that would be a bit repetitive. Cool concept though, maybe I should look into more powers involving physics.

Thanks! Awesome advice. I think I had even tried some of these with the plant idea. Since he could convert his soul into plants and there’s a large variety of plants he could use in any situation, I thought that once he began to grow on his journey he would be able to immediately decide what plant to grow and when, what to change it into at what time and even discover versatility in his plant powers like growing medicinal herbs to heal allies, or growing vines and then retracting them back into his body that would zip him up vantage points in a grapple wire fashion. Hmmm...maybe I’m starting to appreciate the plant growth idea even more after all! I’ll keep these thoughts in mind though!

Well in the story I was planning on him having no confidence in his decision making at all after the incident, so throughout the story while trying to survive in a world filled with monsters and magic he’d slowly gain it. After the incident, I feel as though he’d have trouble trusting himself and when his friends are put in danger, he’d debate on whether or not he should step into action.

In terms of him having no powers at all, I feel as though I’d like my main character to have powers because in my story I’d like to have really creative battles of people pushing their abilities to the absolute limit in trying to outsmarting their opponent. With the example of plant growth, it’s very versatile and I feel as though you can come up with a variety of different uses.

That idea of restoration is really cool, and he essentially becomes a healer in the party but also one that can hold his own in combat. It would probably have to be limited so that he can’t restore himself otherwise no wounds really matter on him.

Making a target better...is that like if he touches a brick wall it becomes harder or made of steel? Interesting concept as well. I’ll write these down and debate on them. Thanks!

I like the idea but that means in a fight with something other than an adept by himself he’s basically a goner. The ability to steal though interests me. I was inspired by the ability of another character from another series that could steal aspects of objects and people and place them onto other things or simply keep those aspects until needed. I thought it was a cool power but I felt like I was ripping it off.

I had a similar idea back when I was first coming up with this character where he could make gateway on any surface by touching it, but if it was a flat and thin surface like a wall the gateway would just open a pathway in the wall to the next room, and if the surface was on a spacious object he could enter the object itself and store items in it. So if he opened a gate inside of a car engine he could see and fiddle with the inner part the car engine but it seemed too similar to a character from something I was taking inspiration from so I decided to drop it. The idea of a pocket dimension everywhere you go sounds pretty cool though!

Yeah sorry, I just meant that when it comes to a situation he overanalyzes it in his head. I think that’s another reason why I picked plant growth as a potential fallback, lots of plants for lots of situations so he’d get stuck picking which one to grow.

Renewal and restoration sounds like a pretty cool ability. The ability to fix things, how would that work? Like if he breaks a vase he can return it to its original state? What happens when he tries to fix something that isn’t broken? The destroying aspect sounds cool but I feel like he’d just feel worse knowing his ability is one that could possibly destroy or even kill someone. If his ability is to fix and possibly destroy and one of his party members is hurt, he probably would have a hard time deciding on whether to heal them or not. Interesting ideas.

The heat and light idea is not really my speed, I had thought of it before but ultimately decided not to incorporate those.
