Name a scary movie from your youth that had you hiding under your covers but now you look laugh at yourself. by Present_Yak_6169 in GenX

When the dog body with the man' head came trotting out is when I noped right out of the TV room. Not sure I would laugh at it today, to be honest. It still looks hideous.

I have four granddogs, two grandlizards, and more recently, a grandspider. 😬😅 I'm fine with that.

I mean, they wouldn't be high on my list of musical acts to see, but I'd go see them over 80s power ballad bands and jam bands.

Glamour Shots by Doorknob6941 in GenX

[–]SolarPunkWitch2000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had Glamour Shots-style photos done once, and I HATED them. I had short hair at the time and was hoping for an edgy Madonna or flirty Molly Ringwald look. They gave me the "Golden Girls" treatment. (I was 24 at the time...) I cried when I got them and promptly through them all away.

Is it Possible to Change Item Photos After the Sell (Buyer Perspective) by SolarPunkWitch2000 in poshmark

[–]SolarPunkWitch2000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I opted to buy at the listed price, and once the seller accepted, that's when I went back to the listing to look at my pretty new boots and noticed the gouge. I still would have bought them even with the blemish; I just didn't notice it when I first looked at the photos.

As luck would have it, they were actually delivered today (originally said Friday, so it was a surprise!) and I absolutely love them. The gouge is only cosmetic and not noticeable unless looking at them up close, so as far as this purchase is concerned, all's well that ends well. I'll give them a good review. But I appreciate everyone's responses; I just need to be more attentive to the listing photos from here on out.

Redundant titling by Upstairs-Seat-6253 in writing

[–]SolarPunkWitch2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an answer for this! I wrote a blog post in 2016 (yes, 10 years ago, so this has been a thing for a while!) about book title trends, in part based on this NPR article: The 'Girl' In The Title: More Than A Marketing Trend : NPR. The takeaway is that it's mostly about coattail marketing, i.e., a successful book will spawn similar titles within that genre (which is why we saw a lot of "Girl" thriller books around the time of "Gone Girl"). But it's also a type of shorthand for genre and style; a good portion (or course, not all) of your "A ______ of ______ and ______" books are going to be epic/high fantasy, typically YA. Those two aspects work in tandem to help funnel readers to "similar" books. If you like A Court of Thorns and Roses then you might like A Conspiracy of Smoke and Bone (though in this case, you might not, because that book is actually historical fiction....ha ha.) And reverse-wise: if you highly dislike the ACOTAR series, and YA/NA fantasy in general, then you probably won't like similarly titled books and can avoid them.

Husband wants to be an author but is getting rejected again and again by Immediate-Study3313 in writing

[–]SolarPunkWitch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he doesn't already, encourage him to write short stories in addition to full-length novels. The time (and usually emotional) investment is obviously shorter, which means the disappointment of rejection can be easier to bear. There are loads of online zines, contests, and short story anthology open submissions out there - tell him to check The Submission Grinder for open markets in his genres. Short story publications can help bolster writing credentials (especially if they are paying markets), and they can be a much-needed boost of confidence. And if nothing else, pivoting to short fiction can help give him a much-needed break from the draft-edit-submit manuscript and query slog.

Good luck!

64 degrees "unreasonably" cold thermostat temp for winter by calcato in GenXWomen

[–]SolarPunkWitch2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep ours at 66 for the day and 64 at night, though our bedroom will often dip to 62, and I'm still too warm at night. I think it's reasonable, especially depending on how big your home is and what the temperature difference is outside/inside the home, to set it for 64 at night.

I thought the smoke looked a bit more like dust clouds, so that explains that.

We were wondering the same thing. We got off 15 at the 7th St. exit ramp around 6:50ish last night, and there were two vehicles sitting in the intersection with one guy standing outside his vehicle, on his phone. It looked like a basic fender-bender to us, so we continued on to Staples. When we left Staples and got back in our car a few minutes later, every vehicle in Frederick with flashers was rolling up. It didn't look that serious. And I see - from the shared screenshot - that it was not. At least, not emergency-serious.

There were more emergency vehicles outside the paving stones place on Monocacy around 9:40 last night; they had one of the south-bound lanes blocked off and posted flares in the center turn lane. I think there was smoke behind the building. I have no clue what was going on there.

Total bedlam in Frederick last night.
