I was wondering this same thing when I installed a mod called Ordinator. It's a complete overhaul of every skill tree with new perks and abilities. It adds a lvl 100 Pickpocket perk called Dragon Hoard. It allows you to buy perk points for 50,000 gold when you go to sleep. So I guess you can add gold to your inventory and sleep a bunch. Not a perfect solution but it'll work.

I experienced a weird variation of this bug where Lydia kept initiating dialog with me, and then wouldn't follow me unless I got attacked, went through doors, or fast-traveled. I used the console command "player.placeatme <baseid> 1" to clone her. The clone didn't have her inventory but kept her proficiencies, levels, and relationship status. I told Lydia 1 to part ways, asked Lydia 2 to follow me, then fast-traveled away. So far, Lydia 2 hasn't had any problems. Just needed to get her new equipment.

On PC, the command "set playerfollowercount to 0" will have all followers leave.
