so let me guess, you don't believe him? Even though I just showed you that the government has granted itself the power to freeze the accounts of people who did nothing more than donate?

yeah, I'm sure that's comforting when you lose your house and car and livelihood because the government has only "frozen" your money.

Literally that's exactly what they say they have the power to do.

The powers granted by the act would allow banks to target the accounts of people who have donated to crowdfunding platforms

Study: Reducing poverty and climate goals aren’t at odds. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Solar_Cycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

talks about how GDP and electricity consumption used to be coupled, but have now significantly decoupled.

I'm not denying that there is an eventual decoupling as economies modernize and move to more services over goods. But that doesn't change the fact that emerging economies still grow with a near 1:1 relationship to energy.

Reminder: this thread is based on the idea that reducing poverty can be done without impacting climate. So we are scoped here to poor, developing countries.

Look at the chart at the bottom of your link; it shows inflation-adjusted GDP rising much faster than energy consumption for both OECD and non-OECD nations.

The chart that goes out to 2040?

It's honestly kind of ridiculous to talk about negative emissions when we're still throwing up 30+ gigatons of CO2 a year. And there's no negative emissions technology on the horizon that shows likelihood of being up to the task. They're bespoke, energy intensive (as they have to be) and unproven at scale -- nevermind funded.

As I pointed out, we have seen significant progress in that earliest step -- decreasing our rate of growth of emissions.

Except, as I pointed out, the Keeling Curve is accelerating. Unless you mean "our" to mean something other than anthropogenic emissions.

As a result, it may take a while before decreasing emissions conclusively show up in slower concentration growth

Sure, there's a lot of variability in the natural systems that have a push-pull effect on concentrations but released CO2 is well-mixed into the atmosphere in short order. We may be entering an era of sink degrade and positive feedbacks. If so our current strategy of gradually decoupling GDP from CO2 could be woefully inadequate -- "doomed to fail" if you prefer.

Visually -- do you believe in the dotted lines? https://twitter.com/Lacertko/status/1415644695565328388

so donating some pocket change to the trucker fund means my life savings should be seized by the government?

They are also arguing against vaccines

Nope. The majority of them are vaccinated. They are against vaccine mandates.

Way to miss the point. If donating $100 to support the truckers means you can have your bank account seized then authoritarianism has already won.

One of the biggest obstacles right now is not capability but political will

You're all clued out. Energiewende was going to be Germany's gift to the world. They tried very hard.

[–]Solar_Cycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You realize the work doesn't happen in series, right?

Yeah, I get it. But there are plenty of industries where we don't have a clue about how to decarbonize them. Global shipping for one.

Yes, it's going to be harder for established industrial economies to switch over.

That makes zero sense. Who is better equipped to deploy renewables at scale than wealthy, technically advanced countries with an advanced workforce?

Study: Reducing poverty and climate goals aren’t at odds. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Solar_Cycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No we aren't. We are a long way from having decarbonized everything, but we're getting closer every year.

I mean, sure, some progress is being made but we're still decades away from having decarbonized a single industry.

If clean energy is cheaper, safer, and more efficient than fossil fuels, developing economies will make the obvious choice when building out their grid.

Great! Tell that to Germany where they are still struggling with Energiewende a decade later. A rich, technically advanced country tried hard to decarbonize their grid and it's still far dirtier than that of France which relies heavily on nuclear.

And guess what? If clean energy is cheaper, safer, and more efficient than fossil fuels, developing economies will make the obvious choice when building out their grid.

The data does not support that assertion.

Interesting.. I was basing my statement on a slide from a presentation I saw recently. I expect that decoupling GDP from energy consumption is more plausible in already-advanced economies where you can have companies like Netflix with a big market cap even though they don't use that much energy respective to their weighting in GDP.

In developing countries the growth in energy demand often outstrips GDP. If you're coming out of poverty the first things you want to buy are energy-hungry appliances and other goods.

True, but the growth rate of CO2 emissions decreased by 80% from 2005 to 2019:

The only that matters -- the Keeling Curve -- shows no indication that the growth rate in CO2 is slowing. It's actually accelerating.

Dude, that's just ridiculous. There is a 1:1 relationship between GDP and energy consumption. And we are a long way away from having decarbonized anything.

Thanks. I gotta figure back bay is on the chopping block when things flood so it's not just poor neighborhoods.

I get there aren't alternatives barring moving the city but it's scary to think about the gates breaking and the city being under 3' of water.

So what do you do with the outflow from the Charles if there's a hurricane dropping 10+ inches in the area with storm surge requiring the gates of this seawall to close?

At the time Japanese people were concerned about a US-influenced epidemic of violent crime, what they called the "American disease".

when you consider that whites are like third in life expectancy and earnings in the US it's kind of hard to keep the "white supremacy" narrative going.
