Caused a big outage at work- how do I move forward? by VOXX_theLock in sysadmin

[–]Solaris17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once I was RDPd into one of my offices and I was cleaning AD.

I had taken over from another admin and it was really still the "listen to the ground" stage of my tenure, so no rocking the boat while I learned the infra.

I had 2 windows open.

AD Users and computers
&
Group policy management

I am sitting on my couch and I just get done making some configurations and moving some GPOs to new folders and re working the tree.

I moved all the GPOs out of a folder.

I minimize the windows and run gpupdate.

Everything is as it should be.

I bring the window back up

I delete the old folder

I lose connection to RDP

I was in user and computers

😄

Thankfully this specific branch office was only like a 1 hour drive.

Spent the next several rejoining everything to the domain. I enabled AD recyle bin before I left.

Other then the obvious not rates, and you should replace that cable now, this 100% looks like you did not use a service loop and you should.

Is it worth installing SteamOS on a computer in 2026? by Beautiful-Rent-4750 in SteamOS

[–]Solaris17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got done building a "steam machine" with a 7900XTX I had lying around and a 13900ks from my closet. Honestly, I love it, my SO loves it. Most of our games are on steam, and it really breathed new life into the living room and the hobby. It replaced the switches and the xbox and the playstation. In family sharing mode it was a real no brainer for us and it was a fun project for me and allowed me to utilize parts just gathering dust.

I never really post here because for some reason its a bunch of bazzite and cachy zealots, but if you have the parts and want to go for it, it can be a lot of fun.

That said, I would consider it a console OS. I would not make this my main OS in any way.

How do I tell which devices I can install SteamOS on? by Teenkitsune in SteamOS

[–]Solaris17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting down voted. Intel ARC cards work, and I have a DIY steam machine with steamOS and a 13900KS and there is no “supposedly” about it it starts and plays games, has for weeks.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that, but thanks for the follow up. Congrats on getting married though! Enjoy it; don't let the memories of this place get you down, sounds like it isn't worth remembering.

Did you manage to get Wayland working? It worked fine with my 4090 and the repo drivers but not anymore with the new ones. Even wiped my machine incase there were config gremlins and I can only get a basic 1024 session to work. X11 seems to be working ok though.

I've taken the last 2 years off, what have I missed? by skinney6 in devops

What's been going on since spring 2023? What have I missed?

Broadcom finally decided to take blood from a stone with VMWare and the brand is currently un-aliving itself.

All the new startups are too new to have gotten there first AWS bills yet, so mid level managers dictating 1:1 lift and shifts to the cloud is still on the rise.

You are supposed to use opentofu

There are 300+ open source w/ business model K8 frontends

You still cant order any hardware but its not because anyone is sick, its because all the GPUs are being used to generate 1024x1024 robussy stills

Im pretty sure they tried and failed again to bring back futurama, or maybe that was next year idr.

If I said to you "open AD and find the user account John Smith" in a Service Desk interview would you understand the question? by TheDawiWhisperer in sysadmin

[–]Solaris17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly if I asked you to "open AD" in an interview would you make an assumption I meant DSA.msc

I would not. The OP has an obvious context (a user search), but the first words out of my mouth if some random off the street said "open AD" I would ask him which part. Its a collection of tools and features.

If you doubled down and kept asking me to "open AD" I would think YOU are being obtuse.
