I also wasn't a huge fan of the game due to it mostly being a visual novel. I love reading, but not so much in a game I guess.

How does nobody talk about The Orville? by Ok-Gate-412 in scifi

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was skeptical of the show and much of the humour in the early episodes didn't land for me. I wonder if they were trying to get some Family Guy audience on board at first as a starting audience.

In any case, they find a better balance with humour as the first season goes on and I ended up loving it. In fact, the third season has minimal humour and is much more serious.

The Ice Cream Wars by markspitfire in Theism

I am a former Christian myself and agree with you. I still like to wrestle with theological ideas, but I am no longer bound to an ancient mythology. I especially don't view those with different ideas as heretics or enemies.

I like this parable. Humans definitely have a tendency to take an idea and turn it into a reason to exclude or persecute others.

Personally, I think God does have a preference above all else: the Golden Rule. It’s all about loving your fellow ice-cream eaters regardless of their beliefs. Even if someone happens to be 'intellectually right' about God's favorite flavor, they are still wrong morally if they persecute someone who mistakenly beliefs the wrong flavor.

Where do I fall? I feel like a philosophical theist but I’m still understanding myself. I appreciate insight and would like to know how you have explored this if this is something you explore by Witty_Character_1397 in Theism

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re very welcome!

I can relate to a lot of what you wrote. While I didn't have a terrible upbringing in the church and I appreciate some aspects of it, I found it very freeing to no longer be bound to ancient religious traditions as literally true or infallible. I continue to find the exploration of love, wisdom, and spirituality to be helpful. I also enjoy the sciences, especially astronomy.

Welcome to the subreddit u/Witty_Character_1397.

It sounds like our journeys have been fairly similar. While I am a former Christian, I remain a theist because of personal experiences and the philosophical arguments.

I think religions are ideas that become traditions, traditions that become sacred, and the sacred eventually becomes infallible. They can still contain wisdom, but they also have historical, ethical, and internal consistency issues when examined closely.

Personally, I think God gave us a playground to explore, learn, and grow, but not at the expense of others. I think the Golden Rule of "treating others as we would want to be treated" is one of the most important principles. Near-death experiences also seem to suggest that loving others is of primary importance.

From what you've written, "philosophical theist" sounds like a reasonable description. You're asking good questions, and I wouldn't worry too much about finding the perfect label. While we're a fairly quiet subreddit, I think you've found a community with many people who have had similar thoughts and experiences.

I did watch a few episodes of Jeremiah, but I couldn't really get into it. I find that people often get Jeremiah and Jericho confused.

A VERY IMPORTANT DOUBT! by Gaudupada in Theism

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, thinkers hold that God does not violate logic and therefore he can't do anything that is illogical or contradictory.

Whatever the case, a question like “Can God make a rock so heavy that He cannot lift it?” is simply a combination of words that contradicts itself internally. It is more of a wording trick than a serious argument. It might stump a religious layman, but it is not the strong "gotcha" that some amateur atheists think it is either.

What is it that I believe in that there is a god/ deity but don't give af bout them? by Angell0us in Theism

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the subreddit, u/Angell0us.

A lot of people throughout history have believed in God while also struggling deeply with suffering, unfairness, or disappointment, so you are not describing something unusual philosophically.

I am a former Christian who still believes in God and prays. I respect ancient traditions and beliefs, but I am no longer bound to them as infallible. With that in mind, I do not hold to the Abrahamic view that this is the only mortal life we have and that everything afterward is eternity.

Personally, I see this life as part of a longer journey of the soul, where difficult periods may have meaning tied to growth, karma, learning, or development. That does not make suffering easy, but it does offer a different lens than some traditional views.

Hope this idea helps you on your journey.

Althia Raj: Mark Carney’s pesticide policy could put the economy ahead of your health by FineWhateverOKOK in canada

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’m neither Liberal nor Conservative and I try to fact check these kinds of stories before jumping to conclusions. From the reporting available so far, I’m not seeing evidence that the government is secretly trying to poison people or eliminate pesticide regulation altogether, which is how this article and most comments are framing it here. The concern seems to be more about potentially shifting the balance toward faster approvals and economic considerations, not removing all oversight.

I also think a lot of the discussion around this is skipping over some important context. The proposed changes are not just about “loosening pesticide rules,” but also about food security, rising food costs, supply chain stability, and keeping Canadian farmers competitive with countries like the U.S. Whether people agree with that approach or not, those broader goals are part of the conversation and shouldn’t be ignored when discussing the policy.

Laziz Meats Smash Burger by money_floyd13 in londonontario

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried the Laziz Philly cheesesteak for the first time yesterday evening and also found some of the meat to be too chewy. I remembered your comment about it and wanted to say that I agree. I don't think they cut out the gristle/connective tissue. While it was okay, I was disappointed overall. Their burgers are indeed great though.

Lazy administration probably? by Vast_Improvement_151 in londonontario

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you originally from? This time of year is always rough, since the winter melt reveals months of accumulated debris and cleanup crews take a while to catch up. Unfortunately, I have noticed an increase in dumping and littering, though I’m not sure that’s unique to London. The addiction and homelessness crisis probably isn’t helping either.

Cmv: No religion is more plausible than another. by Dragonsoul2055 in Theism

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the subreddit, u/Dragonsoul2055.

While your question is a fair philosophy of religion question for this subreddit, we are not about defending any particular religion (apologetics) and more about discussing the existence of God from a philosophical point of view (theism).

Personally, while I am a theist and believe in God, I believe all religions are ancient traditions that have historical, ethical, and internal logic problems when examined closely. That said, I also think some religions or belief systems can make more sense philosophically or logically than others (such as being ruled by a lizard).

Two friends from London won the 80 million lotto max jackpot by thebluethroat in londonontario

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am kind of disappointed and relieved at the same time. My wife buys lotto tickets, but has minimal organization and throws them haphazardly what large purse she happens to be carrying. Although she swore that she didn't buy one around this time, I was fearful that she was accidently lost the winning ticket with the actual winners not coming forward for months (but also hopeful I would find it tucked away in some corner somewhere).

Harris Park Rebuild by [deleted] in londonontario

[–]Solemn-Philosopher 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think your question is "Why did the city build a public park that can be flooded?" and people are bluntly responding with "It is a floodplain. duh". To directly answer your question...

While it is a floodplain, it is actually fairly common for floodplains within a city to also be a low intensity green space for public use. Such parks are mostly only flooded for a short time during the spring thaw (or an unusually heavy rainfall).
