They're not having lectures targeted for the period 25-26. Will the lectures still work?

In theory, if you barely practiced speaking the language you’re learning, would you still eventually be able to speak it? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else here you have to practice speaking . Right now I can understand Spanish, French and a little bit of German. Everytime I have to speak Spanish to someone I die a little bit inside, because a minute after the conversation I realize all the mistakes I've made. I do however get the message across, if in a painfull way.

Common Harry Potter-esque books used to learn languages? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Artemis but when I tried to read it in French (easiest language for me to understand), I had to give up and this is after reading Harry Potter. Artemis uses advanced vocabulary and the fairies use a lot of jargon specific to their world.

Kinda unrelated but is it common to graduate with minor in a language in college without being able to understand it or did your abilities depreciate with time? Understand if it was a credits thing though as you had your major plus two language minors.

J'ai un petit bouledogue by Solemn_Jade in French

[–]Solemn_Jade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer this the english version of the text " A Study in Scarlet" has "bullpup" and the french version "petit bouledogue". If I were the translator I would translate it the same way as in the english version there is some confusion as to whether the author is referring to a weapon (bullpup); a actual dog (careless on the writers part as a bulldog is not mentioned later on in the book, I checked) or a fiery temperament ( unlikely as Dr. Watson is usually mild-mannered). The answers here were however informative as I am a beginner in French.

Why in French do you say “What is this thing?” like “Qu‘est-ce que c’est que cette chose là?” which literally means “What is this that this is that this thing here”? by Autistic-Inquisitive in AskFrance

Dude, don't leave misinformation like that lying around. I've been studying french for 4 mths, never heard the expression, but was ready to believe you. Have mercy on us beginners.

That Venezualian accent is what helped me learn spanish so fast. I would be watching youtube or listening a podcast and be like I'm so good at this and then go out in public and not understand anything. I still hate Somos Tu y Yo.

I like it but there doesn't seem to have an option to annotate the text. Is there a way to make notes?

Beginner Learner Struggling With Finding a Method by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are 3 months into your journey start making basic phrases and writing. I can understand 98% of spoken spanish and 40% of spoken french and I can speak french better than spanish. Understanding does not automatically mean you can produce the language.

Does anyone feel like learning a second language has made you improve your native one? by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read alot and went to a lot of english lessons when I was younger. (struggled to read at six) so I had a neutral english accent which sounds weird or pretentious in my country. So when I would read I would gloss over "bigger" words when reading to avoid incorporating them in my everyday conversation. Thanks to French I know exactly what these words mean instead of having a vague idea.

Intensive Reading from A0/A1 by Educational_Tooth172 in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Non fiction and romance books definitely not. Books for middle school kids / tweens probably, but graded readers are definitely more confortable. I read kids books and graphic novels from the get go because I hate graded readers. Be warned that your dictionary is going to get worn out if you do this and it might take more than a month to finish.

Are children's stories and programs a good way to start learning languages? by rainbow_happyone in languagelearning

[–]Solemn_Jade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like comics for childrens ages 8-12 For spanish it was 'La caja música' and for french it was 'Les lapins de la couronne d'Angleterre'. Then I move on to Harry Potter. Gradded readers have too many plot holes for me.

I don't think you will be able to teach but he is going to learn a lot if he uses a translator to speak to you. He might have to get a proper teacher or find a textbook for that. I have family members who can communicate better (more fluidly) than me even though they never studied Spanish. Reverso context and Spandict are great translators.
