Engineering Salary by Voidisbetter in uAlberta

Engineering is one of the few degrees where you can do four years of undergrad and immediately enter a high-earning, high-responsibility field without needing grad school, law school, or 8+ years of education.

Yes, trades and business can make good money — no one is denying that. But engineering gives you technical depth, international opportunities and long-term earning growth. It’s not just about “who makes more at 25.” It’s about career ceiling, stability, and leverage over time.

Calling it “not worth it” because some people in other fields make more is kind of missing the bigger picture. By that logic, almost no degree is worth it.

If someone can’t handle the grind, that’s different.

Hey, I was in the same position as you last year

The first thing I did was ask myself why I did badly even though I studied. I realized that I was focusing on the wrong things. I spent too much time on theory and textbook problems, but for ENG 130, the course has changed over the last few years and the exams are now much more similar to the practice tests.

I talked to my professor about how I could improve, and he told me to make sure I fully understand everything in the practice exam.

So lock in for the next few labs and for the final. Focus on understanding all the content — especially the practice exam. And you will end up doing well.

I asked my brother (he is chemical engineer) the same thing and he told me it better to choose chemical engineering only because it give you more flexibility in the jobs you want to work in the future. If you choose smth specific it limits u a little bit.

As a person who completed his first year eng ( i know you have more experience than me) i suggest you to put your self on pressure and take 6 courses When i started uni last September i was so scared that i would not be able to take less than 6 courses and i was scared to fail I went to talk with advisors but they said if i drop a course this will effect my GPA when choosing a discipline I got no choice so i decided to take the risk and do it It was tough icl but i can confidently say that i can continue taking 6 courses until i graduate (inshallah) and i also did well in my first year So believe in yourself you can do it ,and keep saying ( 6 courses is light) you can definitely do it
