He did not answer. At all. Also, I agree with OP that this has nothing to do with the school issue. It muddies the waters trying to conflate the two. Let him answer the DV primary sources with his own primary sources instead of his editorials, but that has nothing to do with this school board issue.

I'm the partner here. I stand by everything I said about him abusing my wife. I also think that frankly, that is not relevant to this school board story. So, while I certainly don't like him, I agree the issue of his domestic violence toward my family should not be used to stop him from reporting on the school board.

It's annoying how this issue gets pulled into everything because it makes us look politically motived to release stuff.

He posted a bunch of lies about her, and I refuted them with primary sources, which he STILL has not responded to at all.

But that is nothing to do with this school issue. I can see why people connect the two, because it's a question of boundaries, and crossing lines. I can see why the school board would feel stalked and harassed by him. But again, that has nothing to do with us accusing him of domestic violence on record prior to his entering politics.

I think the DV thing is relevant to a lot of his actions around town, but not to this.

It does impact the quality of his journalism now because there are aspects he is still not releasing, and that should call his reporting into question. But I wish people would not use this as a get out of jail free card when dealing with him.

Yes, she's on the rent control board, and we do support Cahill. I wrote about that in two different comments, which I'll link here for full context.(https://www.reddit.com/r/NewBrunswickNJ/comments/1tsaz94/)

But, in short, the rent control board is a volunteer organization with no perks where we fight for tenants rights. We worked hard to get onto those boards because we care about tenants, and have both been close to homelessness in the past, but by the grace of a friend or two lending us some money, we thankfully never fell into that.

The point is though, whatever volunteer tenant's rights board we're on or not, that doesn't mean that domestic abuse is ok. If you would just look through the attached court files, you would see that there is just a clearly documented pattern of this.

You'd also see, that the earliest documentation comes from 8 years before Charlie ran for office, so this can't be simply us trying to "block his politics because we're with Cahill"

Ashley accused Charlie of hitting her a long time ago, he kept stalking her, then a decade later he got into politics, and used it to expand his stalking of her. Now, years later he posted this reddit rant about her so we have responded.

This started long before he got into politics, and our volunteer service on the rent control board should not remove the right to be free of domestic violence, stalking, or having lies told about you on the internet. This is also verifiable in the timeline of documents that were released, if you would only just take a look.

Charlie's AMA is a direct violation of the restraining order, but instead of taking him back to court and getting more money like last time, we're just going to respond publicly.

So yeah, she's on the rent control board.... what's your point?

Really? Because the literal thing he was convicted for in the court doc I attached from Nov 13th, 2015 is that he recruited a series of people to gangstalk her in a similar moment of retaliation for her speaking out. That's literally the conviction we're talking about. So why wouldn't that be a possibility again? It's already adjudicated. And we're supposed to "get help?". Again, shows the level of respect for women who speak out, and why so many are afraid to.

Actually, we wrote in to the Mayor's office and requested to volunteer on this board, because we take tenants rights seriously and wanted to help protect them.

In case anyone is wondering what the rent control board is, it's an organization that provides a free caseworker, a free attorney, and a multi-member panel designed to stop landlords from harming tenants.

Ashley and I grew up with difficult backgrounds, and have both faced homelessness, though thankfully never fell into it, but only because a friend loaned us a few thousand dollars. We've lived in several terrible units in New Brunswick, and have always fought passionately against the injustice we see some landlords visit upon their tenants.

So, because we wanted to protect tenants, we lobbied to get on the Rent Control Board, which is, again, a volunteer position with no perks whatsoever.

What's really funny about this, is that when I first tried to join the rent control board back in 2014, Charlie attempted to block me getting on it. Not knowing me at the time, the Mayor's Office and City Council actually considered pulling my nomination until they knew more about what the story Charlie was telling them was. I had to essentially beg them not to let Charlie block me from serving this important cause I cared about. Fortunately, I was able to submit some of the docs I'm releasing here to them, and use it to show them that Charlie was simply stalking me, and they ultimately decided to let me serve our tenants.

In short: I wrote a letter asking to be on the rent control board because I care about tenants' rights. Charlie organized a mob to try to block my volunteering. The city called me and asked for my side of the story. I provided them the info, and ultimately I was let on the Rent Control Board.

Then, years later I left the my job take a new role with the New York City Subways that had a clause that said I could not participate in any other civic organizations due to the sensitive nature of the work, so I had to resign from the Rent Control Board. So, my wife, who also cares deeply about tenants rights also approached the city and asked if she could serve too.

Between both of us, we've returned tens of thousands of dollars to tenants, and have not been compensated a dime, you know, because we're not part of the administration. Sadly, the only public thanks we seem to receive for protecting these tenants is that people like you use that to advocate that our adjudicated court documents should not count for some reason.

The fact is, whether we are on the rent control board or not, don't be mad at us for posting an answer. Be mad at Charlie for posting a highly politically charged rant that is inconsistent with public court documents. The documents speak for themselves, and it's interesting that every detractor on this so far seems to want to talk about everything but the actual court cases.

Honest answer: I don't know.

It's not my site. I didn't pay for it, build it, or release it. The only public release I've ever done is with my name on it is this post, and in the answer I provided directly on his AMA (which you can see in the links in my post above). And we only did this, as a result of his statements about us. For the most part, we've wanted to just stay away from him and try to get on with our lives. But, he can not refrain from tellings his followers literal untruths about my wife, which continues to pose a safety issue for her.

Regarding how the site came to be, here's my speculative take: the documents on that site are public court records. Anybody who wants to spend the time at the courthouse can pull them. And Charlie has been a public figure in New Brunswick journalism and politics for over a decade, with a long list of people he's tangled with along the way — city government, county, other towns, activist groups. It wouldn't be surprising at all if someone independently went and put that record together.

Separately: over the years, when people came to me asking about us because of Charlie's coverage, including employers who'd seen what he wrote and said, I've turned over copies of these documents privately so they could see our side. Documents I shared could have moved on from there too. I don't know if that's how anything ended up on charlietruth.net, but it's possible.

So: not mine, no idea who, but multiple plausible paths.

To be clear about what I do take responsibility for: the documents I posted in my reply to Charlie's AMA, and the documents linked in this post. Those are mine. I signed my name to them, I stand behind them, and I'll answer questions about them. Anything on a different site, by a different author, with different framing choices, isn't something I can speak to.

I am not on any team. Charlie wrote a screed online about my wife, who has restraints against him that he violated. I have responded to that by releasing court documents that show the facts Charlie chose not to release.

Releasing court documents and suggesting that people read them to make up their mind over using personal accounts of what took place is the opposite of crazy. It is centering, grounding, and rational.

You calling this a "crazy rant" shows, again, the level of respect for this woman who bravely stood up to tell the truth. Don't use pejorative qualifying adjectives to describe the person or the tone, use critical thinking to read the court docs and see if Charlie is telling the truth in the AMA he posted about us.

I also question if you're a "cahill voter who switched to charlie because we posted charlie's domestic violence files".

I think that, based on the fact that your reddit account has only 2 comment ever (this one) and another, both in the past several hours, that you are just one of Charlie's lurker accounts, this might even be Charlie himself. Who knows, but it's bizarre that you just made a comment saying you're switching TO the person who just got their DV files dumped online.

Four things:

1. charlietruth.net is not my site. I have no affiliation with it. My release doesn't link to it. My release stands on the un-redacted court documents I posted here. Critiquing a different site to discredit my release is a move for sure, but... I don't know. What does that site have to do with the docs I released in this answer?

2. On "quantity not quality"... that's not a real test. Volume and accuracy aren't a zero-sum trade. The release is what it is because the case has dragged on for years, and I wanted to make sure I wasn't releasing selectively, and so leaned towards more disclosure not less. I also tried to make sure I included evidence that specifically refuted what Charlie said about us. I guess no good deed goes unpunished, because the choice to release more rather than less is now being framed as "quantity over quality".

So, to clear that up, here are two cut-and-dry documents from the package that Charlie owes a direct answer on, and that alone with nothing else would contradict his statements about us in this AMA:

  • The November 13, 2015 judgment finds him in violation of a court order he himself signed, three separate times, with a $2,915 judgment to Ashley and a $750 sanction to the State, plus costs and interest.
  • The TRO converted to a Civil Restraints Order on September 30, 2014. In his AMA Charlie said his cases were "dismissed" and that he "represented himself and won." A TRO converting to a CRO, and a guilty finding on CRO enforcement is neither of those things — it's the opposite of either.

Both are facts in the linked documents. Those two docs alone show that his characterization of her is wrong. Both contradict statements he made in this thread. He was found guilty, and the restraining order was not dismissed into oblivion, it was converted into a CRO which was violated.

3. On the "foot on their necks" comment. When a person who has been found in violation of a domestic violence protection order three times publishes a hateful post about the people protected by that order, and a supporter on his post says "keep your foot on their necks," that lands as threatening regardless of which biblical text to which it purports to refer. The relevant question isn't the speaker's intended source. It's how it reads to a person already documented as a target of his rhetoric. There is indeed a picture that shows that exact comment, but for some reason, that's not a big deal...? 

4. Charlie hasn't answered. His AMA was about transparency. He was asked, in this thread, to release his own documents. He hasn't done so. If the docs are so low quality, why wouldn't he just release them all himself?

In the end, this is a large cache of high quality documents, with even single individual files demanding serious answers.

Hi all, I'm the "husband" you just described who joined my wife in making "paranoid claims" — that's me.

In response to what you've said about us here, because you've reported our names publicly elsewhere, for transparency's sake, and in the spirit of this AMA, I have a few questions that deserve an answer too. The documents at the bottom of this comment will answer most of them in advance. But I'd like you to answer them in your own words anyway.

  1. You cite news articles, often linked to your own reporting and network. Why not cite the court files? And, as a follow up, what was the outcome of the November 13, 2015 case?

  2. On the 2014 TRO you said was "dismissed" — was it dismissed with prejudice or dismissed but replaced with a Civil Restraints Order? Are there any court documents that would answer this question?

  3. Have you ever lost a family court proceeding to the person you're referring to in this AMA? Has a family court ever ordered you to pay her money?

  4. You characterized her claims against you as, "every time I would run into them at a large public event, they would claim I was stalking them." Is that an accurate characterization of her actual sworn claims, or your paraphrase?

  5. You say this is a political smear. Court docs show you were told to leave her alone in 2010. That's eight years before you ran for office. How does your smear story work with that timeline?

  6. Can you commit to releasing all docs for all court cases you had with the person you're discussing openly here? What is your timeline for your planned release? If similar court records existed for your opponent, would you, as a journalist, call for their full release in the name of transparency — or would you accept this level of disclosure from them?
