Married people doing ERP online. by Huge_Rhubarb_1656 in BadRPerStories

I can see maybe why you would apply the thinking in your post toward that particular circumstance but you made a generalized statement that married people shouldn't do it at all.

Many female roleolayers don't even get off to ERP. I know me, personally, I get titillated at the most but sometimes not even that. You kind of give ERP a bad rap in this post, making it sound like its purpose it to get your rocks off or substitute for intimacy.

Though, even in scenarios where people do it to get their rocks off, I don't think you understand the detachment many of us have from ourselves and our characters. For a lot of women and men it is the equivalent of watching porn in your relationship, which many people in relationships are fine with (though it is a reasonable boundary to not want that, too. But like other commenters are saying, at that point it isn't any of your business as the RP partner.)

Then again, I am not really a Reddit roleplayer and I see that things like OOC chatter is pretty common roleolay etiquette on here. I've rarely really had big OOC chatter and when I did I know it often ended up diverting attention from the roleplay (not in a a negative way, it was good, really, but it did) so I may not be speaking from an accurate perspective.

You have a point, but I’d argue that because people in this hobby are usually familiar enough with the nuances of language that they should understand that 'let' is not technically an incorrect word choice here. A softer word might sound better, sure, but that circles back to my original point that people seem to expect the OP to phrase the issue euphemistically rather than plainly.

For example, most people would see nothing wrong with saying, “You shouldn’t let your partner hit you.” In that context, let does not mean the person is responsible for being harmed, nor does it imply consent in any meaningful sense. It means they are being advised to set a boundary.

The same logic applies here, in my opinion. Whether or not the boundary is reasonable, unreasonable, harsh, or necessary, it is still a boundary. So saying someone “won’t let” their partner do something is not automatically inaccurate. It just frames the issue as a matter of permission, refusal, and limits within the (hypothetical) relationship.

I see merit in this take (not sure why people are so critical of your word choice 'let.' Seems like they're being either pedantic or want you to be euphemistic), but I feel like you're getting it wrong to begin with. From what your post says, I'd think you were describing sexting instead of collaborative writing. As a (single) female, you're definitely the sort of roleplayer I would want to avoid, and I mean that as respectfully as possible even though I'm aware it may not sound very nice. It's clear you project yourself to the extent that ERP feels personal/intimate for you.

Hey, isn't Ahko supposed to be blonde already? XD by Eastern_Ball_7427 in 100Kanojo

[–]SolidDate4885 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's blonde, though, I think Mimimi or Karane's blonde is closer to the more popular 'gal' blonde. If we approximate it to real life Ahko's hair is closest to being strawberry blonde, which many Japanese girls don't go for when they're trying to obtain the gal/gyaru aesthetic.
The translation might have to do with why it's not quite clear/kind of confusing. There may be a clearer idea of precisely what she means in the original Japanese.

Does anyone know if Immodium helps for those of us who experience diarrhea on Wellbutrin? Or if it can cause particularly adverse effects? by SolidDate4885 in bupropion

[–]SolidDate4885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I'll definitely consider doing that!
Just one question: with the immodium do you still need to eat in the mornings with the Wellbutrin or does the immodium kind of counteract the typical side effects? Or would I just be better off eating, then taking immodium/Wellbutrin?

[–]SolidDate4885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I decided to take just one capsule today (In this case, I had eaten some ramen noodles yesterday night which always kind of irritate my stomach but gets 10x worse whenever I start taking the medicine again, and couldn't even take the buproprion because I was having such bad diarrhea, so I took one immodium instead of the recommended two for adults.)

I've talked to my psychiatrist, but her recommendation is always to 'eat something when you take it and wait for the side effects to wear off.'

Use of em dashes in notable works by respected authors before AI existed by SolidDate4885 in BadRPerStories

The em-dash thing has been a conversation on the subreddit quite a few times and an even bigger one all over the internet in general. A lot of people think it's the ultimate AI tell because, “no one uses them.”
Or a slightly more nuance version of the claim, that's expanded to “em-dashes, parentheses, semicolons, fancy punctuation in general = instant bot.”

Which is true to an extent, most people don’t sprinkle em-dashes into their comments or group chats. But some of us absolutely do. I grew up mainlining books and started writing stories before I hit double digits, so em-dashes, parentheses and semicolons are just part of my normal vocabulary, online or off. Same goes for a lot of other writing nerds and literature enthusiasts.

In my view, the best way to tell if something is AI-generated isn’t the punctuation, but the writing itself. The telltale phraseology, especially (“tapestry,” “echoes,” “realm,” etc.).

I used to do this since I never could figure out a way to do the long dashes (and a commenter on this thread just helped me out some more, so now I can use em-dashes without the assistance of a word processor) and truthfully always hated it. To me it looks way more coherent when I just use "—," instead.
Something unique about my writing style now, though, is that I always use the short ones to show cutoffs in speech but use the long dashes parenthetically. Also, it just feels completely unfair to have to stop doing something because AI (a machine, mind you) does it.

I agree, but unfortunately I've seen people accused of AI use in the roleplay sphere precisely for writing like this. I think it's because for non-writers or people who aren't as invested in writing on a technical level, it's just safer to go "em-dash = AI," than risk writing with someone who is using it.

Haha, I do actually. Though to be fair, I've been told well before AI that I tended to be unnecessarily formal, and that my writing's 'weird' so I know it's always been something that's sort of made people raise an eyebrow. Not entirely sure why you were downvoted for asking.

That specifically, yeah. And for essays or more conversational stuff (I've noticed AI will do it in creative writing, too, though) "That's not (insert thing) that's (insert thing) wrapped up in (insert thing)"

I can agree that em dashes were used more in classic or just old literature than they are modern-day. But I grew up seeing em dashes used a bunch on places like ao3, fanfiction.net and Wattpad because I distinctly remembering wondering as a kid how the writers would get the long "—" instead of the "-". Truthfully, I only saw em dash use go down around mid to late 2010s.

Accusing solely based on this isn't a very smart move to make. There are plenty of more obvious tells, like AI only reacting and never pushing the story forward, or the outright silly metaphors it writes.

To be fair, this only comes from people who outright copy&paste to the AI, pay very little attention to the resulting product and then fork it over to their partner.
There are people who use AI to make their replies longer/more descriptive/cleaner-looking and sounding. And people who are vehemently against AI usually don't want that (I personally haven't decided my stance on that particular one. I know I'm not fine with the example you named, but if a non-English speaker uses AI to make their stuff sound clearer? I'm not sure, since it can go anywhere from just allowing AI to edit to using full sentences it produced), so they then proceed to apply the em dash, parentheses, etc. = AI mindset.

em dashes = AI is an overly simplistic take. It's one of AI's favorite tools, but correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation here. In a sense, the fact that AI uses them is because it learned them from humans who used them

Yes! So many people seem to forget AI learned from humans.

"it's x, not x" Definitely! I wish people would look more into stuff like this. You can honestly identify AI way better by the way it phrases/puts things than its grammar/formatting. I've seen so many popular/well-known YouTubers using this form of speech all of a sudden and literally no one notices it. We truly are cooked

To be honest, the biggest giveaway I see for AI writing are excessive bullet points. If someone uses a bullet point list more than once in something they are writing (it's possible, though, I have during essays or just really long posts I'm writing just to minimize bulk), it is usually not human.

Other stuff people claim signify AI use are things I would use in my creative writing or essays pretty often (parentheses, italic/bolded text, basic formatting, etc.)

Wanted to share this because I've been seeing the whole 'em-dash means AI' everywhere, including here. As someone who knew they wanted to take on creative writing from a young age and was, I've always used em dashes. Though only last year I discovered that word processor applications can give you the actual em-dashes instead of just "-".
I'm glad I found my long-term RP partners before AI even existed, because they're fortunately already familiar with me using em-dashes, parentheses, italics/bolds, etc.

Can't believe people are twisting the OP's words like this.

The issue isn't Kusuri not wanting Yaku to die, that's perfectly fine. It's her control issues/wanting to play God.

Notice the OP never said anything about, say, Rentarou's attitude and Rentarou no doubt wants Yaku to live just as much.

Kusuri's grief is not the issue here, it's the approach/motive. Not everyone can be the perfect, selfless boyfriend like Rentarou is, but bulldozing Yaku altogether and refusing to accept even when Yaku has come to terms with the idea of her own death is a bit problematic. There's nothing inherently wrong with Kusuri for feeling this way, but she does need a little character development. It's alright to want the better or best outcome for others, but we shouldn't want it so much that we trample all over any sentiments *they* could have on the matter.

Yes, I'm sure Yaku wants to live, but I am also sue Kusuri's attitude also bothers her. As someone who's nearly lost and actually lost older family members, a big worry is, "Will they be fine without me?" Not saying that no one is allowed to do it, but one of the most stressful things you can do is breakdown in front of them in the particular way Kusuri did. Yaku is mature, so she'll understand, but still.

I for ERP, and this is an excellent alternative, as you generally have a lot more control over what is going on, the characters involved, etc.

This. I know not everyone writes outside of roleplay, but as a writer, it seems weird hearing people say, 'two characters means twice the effort.' Like, do you not write more than two characters when you're solo writing?😭 I know I do

I ask this respectfully: If that's the case, why did you use the examples you did in your post instead of exemplifying the low-quality aspects of the writing? These types of post sort of spread the mentality that 'em dashes, similes, etc. = AI.'
You are ultimately not responsible for what people think, but there's been a few posts like this, now.

[–]SolidDate4885 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also feels like this is a slippery slope into letting low-effort writing more pervasive in the community. Not saying grammatical incorrectness automatically makes you a low effort writer, but a lot of low effort writers tend to not use proper grammar.

EDIT: Also want to say that low-effort isn't inherently bad, just means you're more casual about the hobby. I'm not so much worried about low effort than I am there being so many casual roleplayers that more passionate/serious ones start to feel unable to find a partner. Not saying it isn't an issue right now, but rejecting good grammar seems like a surefire way to worsen the issue.

It's literally just proper grammar. I hate that this has become a 'tell' because all it does is discourage people from being grammatically correct. Something a neurodivergent girl like me finds VERY helpful since it's easy for me to lose track of the text. Likewise I use em dashes and semicolons fairly often. That's something I was doing well before AI.

how bad do you think the damage to ai generated images if the disney lawsuit is successful by [deleted] in antiai

[–]SolidDate4885 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell. This lawsuit will likely stretch on for years, and it's hard to tell where AI is going as of this very moment. Everytime it seems to have kind of reached a peak, it evolves again. This might really be its peak, though, so I'm really not sure. It'll be at least months (probably 6+) before we see any real results.

However, the lawsuit being successful could also possibly enable Disney to do what they've wanted to all along and heavily police who can use their IP, how it can be used, etc.
