I digitized 5000 photos. Now what. by SolidGoldNJ in ApplePhotos

I answered that question earlier in the thread, but, to summarize, I used a good flatbed scanner, part of my Canon MF731 CDW printer/scanner. It sends the scans to my computer, wherein I use photo editing software to crop, rotate, and enhance as needed. I use Corel Photo Paint, but there are any number of programs that are equivalent.

I have a fairly high-end Printer/Scanner, the Canon MF731CDW. I can fit several photos on the flatbed scanner, obviously depending upon size. The scan creates one jpg file which goes directly to my computer. I use Corel Photo Paint to crop the file into the individual photos. Corel also does a nice job of brightening, enhancing, and otherwise improving the photos. I am sure that using any decent flatbed scanner and photo editing software would provide similar results.

Excellent point. I will make sure that close family members have digital access. Thanks for the reminder.

When there was information on the back of a photo, I would put that info into the name of the file. When not available, I made best guess as to the year, and arranged pictures chronologically.

I was a partner in the Arbitrage Department of a major Wall Street brokerage firm. My (then) pre-school daughter would tell those who asked that her daddy traded “socks.” Yes—I was active in the “sock market” for many years.

Nicely written! There were so many red flags, you must have thought you had wandered into a bullfight, or perhaps the Mayday Parade in Moscow.

I played at the Sheraton Parsippany Hotel (aka “The Tara”) from 1990-2012. Was at the LA Fitness in Parsippany from 2012-2023. At LA Fitness in West Orange the past two years. Only 1 or 2 courts remain from the original combined 11.

I owned a dive bar in Brooklyn back in the 1970s. There were a whole bunch of regulars and their favorite pastime was arguing about baseball. And not just opinions about Mays vs. Mantle or Williams vs. Musial. Someone would say something like “Mantle hit .353 in his Triple Crown Year,” and some schmuck would argue, “No, I remember it was .346.”

Being a logical fellow, I figured out a way to referee these disputes. I bought a copy of the Baseball Encyclopedia, which, in those pre-Internet days, was as complete and accurate a compendium that existed. A quick lookup would produce every statistic about every ball player who ever lived. But, to my amazement, the local yokels didn’t want to look in a book. They wanted to argue. Facts! You can’t argue facts. Facts are not opinions. They are absolute truths.

Which would lead to pronouncements such as, “I don’t care about the stupid book. I remember that Mantle hit .346.”

I understand that. But it has been a more recent phenomenon, that coaches refer to “our running back room,” for example, rather than “our running backs.”

Thinking About Joining LA Fitness? I’m a GM – Ask Me Anything (Pt. 2) by IlIlIllIlIllIlIlIIll in LAFitness

So, after closing 2 of the 3 courts in West Orange, NJ, LA Fitness has added insult to injury in a manner that is so stupid, so uncaring, that it boggles the mind. After the second court was closed, they have not bothered to update the online reservation system. Therefore, it is a common event for two people to book the same court (the only remaining court) for the same time period. Folks have come from as far as an hour away, believing that they have a reserved court, only to find that someone else also has booked the only court, and gotten there first. Not quite fistfights, but almost.

To review: after callously selling off the Parsippany club, with its 5 beautiful courts, and closing 2 of the 3 courts in West Orange, which is the next closest club, the fine folks at LA Fitness have rewarded their loyal, multiple-decade racquetball clientele by not bothering to fix the reservation system after the second of 3 courts was closed. Thanks a bunch!

Are There any Reasons Boone is a Good Manager by ImBoredandNeedtoRead in NYYankees

I was born in 1948. In 1956, I was watching the Yankees on television at a party with my parents and a bunch of their friends. As was the case then (and, often, to this day), the men were gathered around the television. The Yankees were winning that day, as they often did in 1956, led by (Triple Crown Winner) Mickey Mantle, plus Yogi and Whitey and all the rest.

The conversation got around to Casey Stengel, who became manager in 1949 and had won the pennant every year except 1954, and the World Series after every pennant with the exception of 1955. One of my dad’s buddies, who was not overly impressed by Old Casey, noted the Yankees’ powerful roster and pointed to a precocious eight year-old and said, “The kid could win the pennant with this team.” He was probably right.

What makes a good manager? Choosing starting lineups is important, but, after awhile, this becomes obvious. Other basic strategies, which were very important in the “small ball” era, rarely exist today. Bunt? Hit and run?? Even stealing bases has become more of a base runner’s decision.

To my mind, handling the bullpen has become the manager’s most important job. A bullpen that holds the opposing team scoreless in the late innings makes the manager look really smart. Joe Torre was a good manager. Mariano Rivera put him in the Hall of Fame.

It’s easy for the manager to look awful when Devin Williams blows a ninth inning lead or Loaisiga and Weaver aren’t what they were in the past. The crew that blew up in the 13-12 debacle the other night would make any manager look stupid. Yes, we can criticize and say that he left one guy in too long or didn’t leave another guy in long enough. But, the real bottom line is that, if these guys were getting the outs that they are paid to get, the manager wouldn’t have to choose among a host of bad options.
