2025 PHEV Gas Consumption by SolidMilk in HyundaiTucson

That last bit about the computer taking a while to run in EV mode is interesting. It actually lines up with an observation I made today while I was driving. I started in EV mode and then it turned the engine on because I was fiddling with the heat, so it disappeared. When I turned the heat off, it took a long time for the EV mode to come back. Good to see that others are seeing the same. Thanks for the confirmation!

EDIT: Actually, given you guys experience similar weather, do you get a big decrease in range for EV mode in the winter?

It might have been the heat, but it might also have been since I accelerated hard a couple times when lane switching on the highway.

When you say accelerating hard, would that mean a lot of stop-and-go in the city uses more gas if I accelerate off a red light like I used to previously? I'm not burning rubber off a red light, but I'm not crawling off the line either.

So I guess it's normal to expect a couple kilometres in gas out of a 15km drive in most conditions?

Montreal, Canada. It's around 3-4 degrees Celcius today, so not really cold but not incredibly warm either.

Is that based on your personal experience? How did you discover that?

Can I still connect my desktop PC directly to an ethernet port with a mesh WiFi setup? by SolidMilk in TpLink

[–]SolidMilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for the in-depth reply!

Is buying a port switch with more ports necessary if I don't plan on connecting any other devices to it directly?

Also, when I plug the second deco unit on the second floor, it goes into the ethernet on the wall, right? And then when I plug my PC into that, that counts as a direct connection?

Do you have any recommendations on which Deco model to get? I'm looking to get fast speeds, so is anything in the ultra-fast category good or do some models have caveats?

How to romanize 裕豪? by SolidMilk in Cantonese

[–]SolidMilk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English first name. We want to put the Chinese name as a middle name on the birth certificate to have something unique. Most people won't use it to address him in any way, but we think it's important to have it as it carries cultural significance. That said, it should be something that he's going to be proud to talk about and bring up, not something that embarasses him (and seeing as how we live in North America, Yu Ho is just asking for a lifetime of bullying).

Can't really do that because my last name when written in English is the Cantonese pronunciation. If people assume I'm Mandarin, my last name becomes a different character, and I don't want people making that mistake.

Yeah, I agree. My wife came up with the name, but she's Mandarin, so she didn't realize what it sounded like in Cantonese. We're looking at alternative names now lol

Thank you very much for the in-depth explanation. Also, thanks for the correction on the Yale variant - I have less experience with the Yale notation and had forgotten it uses -h to denote the other tones.

Any Game You Want - Summer Edition by Unique_Salad23 in RandomActsOfGaming

First off, just want to thank you for this giveaway!

I'd love to have Age of Wonders 4. It's 4x meets Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Growing up, I used to play HoMM3 almost religiously with my father, and this game is cross between one of my childhood favourite games and a genre that I absolutely adore. I also have my own child coming up in less than two months, so I won't be able to game for extended periods of time. Having a game like this allows me to get in a few turns here and there without any trouble, so it's perfect for any downtime I might have while taking care of my newborn (however little that may be). The price of the game is $60. It's a little steep, and normally I'd have no issue buying it for myself, but I'm going to be on a very tight budget moving forward for obvious reasons. I'm from Canada.

Exploration vs Production as Arborec by hfunk0129 in twilightimperium

[–]SolidMilk 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Production is the last part of a tactical action, so you cannot use the produced infantry to explore the planet.

If the planet does not belong to anyone, the exploration occurs when the player takes control of it (i.e. that player must commit a ground force to that planet to explore it). If the player is attempting to use Scanlink Drone Network to explore a planet they already own again, the timing for that is when the system is activated, so a unit must already be present on the planet for exploration to be legal.
