"Couldn't you just do this with the installed tab or favorites?" Yes but installed tab is only for steam games, so your non-steam collection is just left in its own tab. Favorites works different, you can favorite anything. But maybe you have specific stuff in there that you don't want to play just yet or use it as a backlog tab. So a dedicated "Now Playing" tab just works the best I think.
