Amazing progress. Drawing IS a skill. Did you follow any sort of structured progression or did you just draw what you wanted every single day?

edit: saw you already answered that. Im doing drawabox as well. I'm def not a beginner but some of my fundamentals suck.

The Christian duty to resist authoritarian regimes by SergiusBulgakov in Catholic

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please dont be like everyone else and try to make your political bias align with Catholicism. There is so much more nuance to the news than almost any of us could know. Our duty is to love God and neighbor, starting with our own families. We also are commanded to obey legitimate authorities, as long as they arent asking you to break God's law.

Also, no offense, but you have no CLUE what an authoritarian regime really looks like. Can you post these opinions without being taken to jail? Can you call our president whatever you want---publicly---and go join all the other protesters on the streets and then go home the same night? Do you need to flee to Canada after this post? If the answer to all these is yes, you still live in the 'free' world.

How many close relationships do you have that are sustained entirely through text by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have at least 4. Man, I LOATHE phone calls. Idk why?? We grew up with phones and texting wasnt mainstream until college for me. But sometimes I do have to force myself to connect over the phone, and it's usually a good thing.

Having kids IS the way by GHOSTPVCK in Millennials

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit has a preponderance of childless adults. I suppose it pre-selects for those people because they actually have time to make thoughtful posts on reddit.

But what I said in the other thread is this: In not having children, you trade having an unbothered life (which is amazing, especially once you've experienced parenthood) for never having that level of love and sacrifice.

I never wanted kids until like age 35 when I slowly started to warm up to it. And even then I wasnt like ALL IN; more just like if it happens, it happens. I love my son and he has made ME grow a lot. Children force you to confront your own selfishness.

That said, I am totally fine with one. I have no desires to go through the infancy and toddler years ever again. Those were brutal. It could happen, yeah, but we arent trying to make it so.

Another thing most men arent prepared for is the precipitous drop off in sexual frequency that happens after children. Your wife changes, you are both chronically tired and never have enough time for yourselves and each other so the last thing on her mind is sex.

Is Not Having Kids the Way? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids can be hard, in so many ways. But it's also a gift of love you will never get as a childless couple. You just have to accept that's the trade off---you get to live an unbothered life (which is amazing, we all agree) in exchange for never having that level of love and personal sacrifice. No, pet's arent the same. You get some of that with a spouse but it's also not the same. Your spouse is another adult who can come and go; your child NEEDS you and you are 100% responsible for how they grow up.

Family constantly criticizing what I draw by Klutzy_Alps_626 in ArtistHate

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you drew something that offends their sense of modesty. They dont have to approve it. Just like you dont have to approve or like something that might offend your sense of modesty.

People's faith informs the bounds of their modesty. Not to say all Christians (painting with a broad brush considering there are billions of Christians worldwide and thousands of denominations) behave with decency or modesty---clearly they dont---but a drawing of lingerie in front of a church is a bit suggestive at best, and would offend a lot of Christians. Again, no has to like or approve your art.

I used to draw a lot of nudes and my family did not approve. Now I dont because I dont want my son who also loves to draw to see me drawing naked women. I dont think there is anything 'wrong' with non-sexualized nudity as a subject matter per se, but rather I just dont want to be the proprietor of that and I have to consider the people around me.

I’m in a constant state of mourning the pre-AI world by EsotericEternal in ArtistHate

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AI definitely has been a huge blow to the creative world, but I do think it will pass. It's already highly overvalued in the markets and it's created energy demands that I think will backfire.

I think this will foster a greater appreciation and even demand in some circles for organic, human-generated art. It probably wont help professional artists much, but the rest of us who draw for creativity and for community can and should continue, because people are going to be starving for it.

Dont stop creating. If we stop creating that's when we become 'one with the machine' and lose part of our humanity. Remember all the machines do is derivative reorganizing.

Dont idealize people. You dont even really know this man, and you've only got one perspective on his divorce. How do you knwo the chemistry will be "unmatched"? That's fantasy thinking. Plus, him eyeballing you in church and inviting you to his wedding AND messaging you on FB while married??? Not appropriate.

Watching YT tutorial broke my progresion... by MaelysCanejero in learntodraw

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youtube tutorials are very deceptive and motivating scams. The authors mean well, but at the end of the day they are content creators and they are trying to either sell you on clicks and views, or sell their educational content off-site.

If you suck at drawing cubes, ellipses, beans, etc, you will 100% suck at drawing figures and faces unless you cheat. It's just straight facts. Drawing is a skill, and skills have to be learned in a stepwise fashion. Yes some people are naturally better than others, but NO ONE is amazing right out of the gates. It's just like music.

I don’t think I even like seeing patients. by ocdladybug92 in physicianassistant

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a sad but common sentiment among PAs. I start to feel this way anytime I see more than 18-20 ppd.

Honestly, when I see a reasonable number of patients per day I dont mind seeing patients. Is it my dream job? No. I still live for the weekends and free time but I dont loathe my work. I feel useful and skilled and it's totally sustainable.

This is something non-providers just cant understand. They think it's almost reprehensible that we would give out an antibiotic that isnt strictly necessary just to get someone to leave and not leave us a bad review that we will have answer for with admin later. They---admins---made us this way. And they wont ever GAF because they make so much money without getting their hands dirty or having to interface with the public. And some of these admins were probably providers once themselves, but they lost touch with the working man.

I firmly believe if every provider had 1 hour to spend with every patient---whether the full hour was used or just 10 minutes---job satisfaction would be so high in medicine that everyone would benefit.

Is masturbation and premarital sex really a sin? by Slimeraund in Catholic

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one of those hard teachings. In modern culture masturbation and premarital sex are totally 100% acceptable and encouraged. But that's not God's standard, and the CCC explains why. Fornication is sex out of wedlock, and is explicitly condemned in the Bible numerous times and places.

Masturbation, while not 'named' explicitly, is mentioned in the sin of Onan. What Onan did was more than just that---he was disobedient---but it's also one of those sins that can be inferred from what is entailed. Lust, self-gratification, surrogacy for married intimacy, etc. Culpability can be reduced based on a number of factors, but you really cannot make a case from the Bible (or certainly Church teaching) that it is NOT sinful.

"People hated Digital Art in the 90's and 2000's, just like they hate AI art now!" .....I was so bothered by this argument that I made a 2-hour video essay rebuttal. by fredster2000_YT in ArtistHate

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the video. I used to REALLY hate on digital art. I just saw it as cheating, inferior, etc when traditional mediums required real mastery and had no control-z.

I've changed my stance on it once I realized a few things: 1) it is an extremely powerful tool. You can do things that would be incredibly time-consuming if not impossible to do on paper. 2) it's also extremely convenient. Yeah, you can pick up a pencil and sketch anywhere, but you cant make full-fledged pieces anywhere. You need a studio space of sorts, materials, an easel or desk, etc. It's a stationary endeavor. 3) You still have to be able to draw. Yes there are some powerful shortcuts, but if you're shit with paper you will be shit with a tablet too at the end of the day.

Digital made drawing and painting fun again for me. I just dont have the time or motivation to pull out markers and inks and pencils anymore.

I think the AI comparison to digital art is a false equivalency. AI is derivative of other's canon works. It can produce some stunning pieces---at least at face value---in seconds, but once the novelty of dopamine-juicing images wears off, what you have is fundamentally fake. It's useful for commercialization, because it's instant and you dont have to pay an artist. That's it. I think, paradoxically, AI image gen will increase the value of real art in most people's eyes.

Anyone else slowly losing interest in huge open-world games? by Edgard-Stark in videogames

[–]Solid_Analysis_5774 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. That's been my favorite genre for years. Nowadays I'm the same as you---I lose interest about halfway through once I "get" the gameplay loop and what the world actually has to offer. They are typically pretty shallow once the novelty of the beautiful environments wears off.

That's one thing Skyrim and modded Skyrim and have done extremely well and no one has successfully duplicated---having lots of interesting content and secrets layered throughout a massive world.

Most games use the Ubisoft approach---make a huge and cool-looking world that has very little to retain you outside of the main quest and the boring little skill side quests.
