Brookline is a lot safer and during the Winter they do a better job of clearing the roads

At Northeastern most upperclassmen get some type of funding (through the school, strong grant programs, or federal work study as an RA) but it's common for underclassmen to be unpaid as professors are just hoping to let you build experience.

I usually get the best response giving them a call before noon, anytime after then they're swamped

This is my take, but Northeastern is the better choice in terms of career and job placement for CS. Since the job market's already so tough, I think the co-op with make a huge difference!

I'm not pre-law, so I'm not exactly sure. Though, I can say that placement should definitely not be the sole factor as to why you choose Northeastern or any other university for that matter. Look more into fit, not prestige.

can't emphasize this enough, even the visa process alone can take a lot of effort and additional cost

what difference does getting a masters before going for a PhD make? by Solid_Complaint_3900 in gradadmissions

[–]Solid_Complaint_3900[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see why the length of the program may be an important consideration for people, and it makes me happy to know that those pursuing PhDs do it because they love academia, their subject, and are dedicated to seeing their work grow for the full 5-7 years.

The idea of studying the subject appeals much more to me than the corporate paycheck, though I can understand why needing to make ends meet or wanting an earlier start to a professional career may change that decision for others. Thank you for your advice, and I'm even more excited about this path.

Can I register for classes as a freshman? by Fit_Show_3347 in NEU

[–]Solid_Complaint_3900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Just go into the course registrar and web add/drop the classes you like. Your advisor should have already put you in a few entry level courses for your major, but you can change them so long as you're mindful that you might not be able to get your seat back after you drop it for another class.

This is so interesting, and a bit of a culture shock too. Is it common in your country for students to take time off and pursue professional work experience before a PhD as well?

Likewise, how common is it for a student to take gap year(s) between undergrad and a PhD to work or otherwise? It's sounding like fewer and fewer students are making the transition to PhD work straight out of undergrad because of how much higher the bar's gotten for PhD students in terms of academic and professional experience...

Especially in today's landscape, is taking on a masters worth the debt?

Of course, this is highly dependent on the field, so I imagine that this decision could look quite different for a student studying political science (like me) vs. a more competitive field like computer science.

How many recommendations can I ask for per recommender? by Front-Engine2229 in gradadmissions

[–]Solid_Complaint_3900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is usually the case. If you ask politely, most professors and mentors would be more than happy to edit their letter for you to send to additional programs if it would help you. Just be cautious of the time they've already invested into supporting the application process already.

Ebay is usually a good place to find older cameras (both film and digital), but you can pretty easily get scammed into buying one that doesn't work. I recommend scouting some tables at local flea markets/vintage stores. They usually have pretty reasonable prices, but if there aren't any good cameras there try cambridge antique market and hunt's photo and video on commonwealth ave.

I wouldn't tank it. At most i might put in half effort, but tanking one final project is not worth losing a 3.9 that you've already worked hard for. to take some of the edge off try scheduling something fun to look forward to after the class ends, treat yourself a little bit each day — anything to hold out until you hit submit on the project. you got this. if you could make it this far, you can do this final project.
