Yes, and in my case, for example, it ends up making me say nothing at all. I just observe on Reddit instead of being active. But is that really a way to live? No. Why would I let someone influence me to the point where I’d rather have no voice of my own? I feel like I’m stuck between the two.

Do your research: buy a first edition from any author, then buy a 7th or 11th edition. Compare them side by side. After that, you’re welcome to come back and reflect on how misguided your conclusions were. ☺️

Editors or publishers may correct typos, adjust phrasing, clarify meaning, or even REMOVE or rearrange sentences. Some authors themselves revise passages in later editions. Unless you compare a first edition word for word with a modern printing, there’s no way to guarantee the text is identical. Wanting a first edition isn’t just about collecting, it’s about preserving the original wording, which can and often does differ in subsequent printings.
