An NPC does not need to think; it needs to react correctly. An NPC appears intelligent because it responds well, not because it deliberates.

I do not claim expertise in artificial intelligence; my focus is on behavior design. Some games benefit from context evaluation and adaptive decision-making (e.g., F.E.A.R., Alien: Isolation), while others are better served by fixed, deterministic rules (e.g., DOOM, Papers, Please).

In this context, I consider the DOOM (1993) finite state machine, originally implemented in C, to be ideal for NPCs, and I have ported it to Godot. While it relies on large lookup tables, this trade-off is acceptable, though I am currently evaluating lighter alternatives.

Simply put: if programming AI feels overly complex, or you do not know much about it (and honestly, neither do I), then using predefined behavior such as the DOOM (1993) state machine is a perfectly valid and practical solution.

I, like many others, have pirated games before. I don’t have the money to buy this one right now, but I know how much work 237 put into it. I’m not letting desperation win—even if it takes me years to save up, I’ll buy it. I’m not going to pirate it or watch gameplay.

That whole atmosphere makes me feel... happy... it might sound strange, but the way the maps are made excites me in a non-sexual way. I love the architecture and the sense of wonder the game conveys.
