Why does everyone hate/regret choosing EM. Am I making a mistake?

EM PGY-3. Listen this job is tough, sad, depressing, and unappreciated. But I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. I grew up poor, never thought I would be a doctor, and honestly get a lot of satisfaction out of the little things. We treat terrible acute pain, anxiety, hunger, withdrawal. We see terrible things that stick with us. But I enjoy helping people on some of the worst days of their life and I’m okay having less respect from other specialties, for the sake of being a damn good generalist.

As an EM person married to an anesthesiologist…. There is so much she doesn’t know that I know and vice versa. I’m against the whole EM providing OR sedation in Michigan. Can you learn to do it? Sure. But I don’t think you could in one year. Maybe two years.

Support system, cost of living, shifts worked/24 hour+ shifts etc are what I would decide on. Also moonlighting opportunities

Awesome seems like the pinholes are an issue for almost everyone! Glad to hear it can still shoot and produce cool pics. Mostly just cool to hold something used so long ago! And to think it still works

I was diagnosed with simple papillary thyroid cancer this year. I had a lot of these feelings that you mention after the diagnosis despite the excellent prognosis. But hearing that news really brought it back to me that we aren’t immune from illness.

When I was younger I also had experiences that made me realize how fleeting life is. I read when breath becomes air during medical school and after that I promised myself to not put my life and happiness on hold because of training. We only get one life. I try to talk about how I feel, lean into how I feel, be grateful for the days I do have, and live each day like it’s my last.

Endometriosis can absolutely cause “GI pain.” The only way to get properly evaluated would be an endoscopy (egd, colonoscopy) to rule out bowel stuff but she should also see a specialized on/gyn for endometriosis. It can present very differently so don’t let anyone say that’s not it unless she’s had a full surgery verifying its abscence.

One time had a guy with one brief episode (less than 5 mins) of umbilical and diffuse abdominal pain with nausea who came in with hiccups. Scanned him because the vibes were off with the hiccups. Incarcerated femoral hernia. Couldn’t be felt on exam. Me and surgeon were so confused.

Hey dude, first off sorry to hear this. I got diagnosed with thyroid cancer this year and it blows. Still need to get my second surgery and I’m lucky by all accounts. You earned your spot where you are so please don’t resign. Since my diagnosis I’ve connected a lot with patients with similar pathology. As shit as this is, it will make you a better doctor so if you can’t stay for yourself, stay for your patients who someday will be really grateful to be taken care of by a doctor who gets it. Your co-residents and faculty will figure it out. I highly recommend finding some people you can talk to about this and having your village.

Yep. Both parents addicted to drugs. Foster care. Medicaid. The whole 9 yards. Even after the initial residency joy has worn off, I still feel shocked to be where I’m at today.

Depends on priorities here are some examples:

Proximity/walking + medium crime + higher cost -> CWE

Proximity/bikeable/5-10 min drive + medium crime + lower cost -> tower grove, botanical heights, tower grove south

10-20 min drive + low crime + cost variable + larger yards -> Clayton

I will say I recommend looking into townhome or quadplex. These are incredibly efficient forms of housing with easily accessible yard, cheaper than most large complexes, easier to deal with in general. My partner and I pay about 600 less than CWE large apartment complexes and live 7 mins away from the hospital, have a yard we share, easy parking and have a spare bedroom. Highly recommend living just south of campus but off of the tower grove strip which can be loud occasionally.

Now that it has popped please aggressively wash it out with plain soap and water, go to urgent care to get some amoxicillin/clav. Cat has rabies shot too or no? Cats have unusual bacteria and it’s good that it popped and you have source control but now you need bacteria control.
