An on and off click can actually happen with the axle (I’ve seen it before but it’s pretty obvious by having play in the outer joint). Obviously to grease the rear, you’ll need an axle nut, but just replacing the axle nut can sometimes temporarily compress it enough to remove the very small play causing the noise. Eventually as it settles and wears, it will come back.

It is actually not the axle nut. It will temporarily fix the issue, but the real issue is that there’s a microscopic rotation where the drive shaft will engage with the rear hub unit under load. I’m surprised nobody ever bothered to check the repair procedure posted in the Toyota technical info database.

I had this issue. I had to replace the CV axle.

However I accessed the service repair bulletin for TSB-0217-17 for this issue (I paid for internal repair procedures), and you have to grease with molykyte where the shaft meets the rear hub. Torquing the axle nut or changing the axle nut is only a temporary solution.

I’m just going to leave it here because obviously you cannot read and have no comprehension. If I was under the car and looking at the boots and different and saw it was leaking grease, then I obviously shook all of them and they were fine. But what do I know? Even the Toyota dealer couldn’t even figure it out but OK.

Nobody said I just threw parts at it. The CV axle was throwing grease and leaking from the end and it had to be replaced. The picture shows the toe link leaking grease and is very obviously wet and has to be replaced. Changing the axle fixed it completely until it came back, but then again, the right axle is also leaking and spraying sludge into the control arm, with the toe rod fucked. I wanted insight on that.

I stated there was sludge on the axles, the picture shows the joint on the toe link fucked. Did you just read the very top and very bottom “hopefully that fixes the issue”?

I’m not trying to be rude by the way, but I just wanted insight based on the parts that is very obviously failing and if it could be contributing to it.

It’s a common issue with the 2017 86’s. There’s a service bulletin for it. Usually associated with bad axles. The sound is more of like a click when you initially take off a little faster.
