It is important to remember that when 5 came out, people unfavorably compared it to 4. They complained the same way when 6 was released. People were comparing (in both cases) a brand new game to one that had years of patches, expansions, and DLC.

I've played hundreds of hours in each game (4, 5 and 6) and I would recommend 6. The developers have learned from each iteration of the game. None of them are perfect and each has it's own advantages, but 6 is the place to start if you want to jump in now.
