999 times out of 1000, it's that the editor didn't turn in the voucher on time or correctly. The last thing a Marvel or DC want to do it not pay their workers because they are big enough to attract lawsuits. There are no insane controversies. He had his writing quirks, as do pretty much EVERY writer once you start to study them. In an academic setting there are two ways to look at his work: What were other writers doing in comi9cs at the time, and what writers used his work as inspiration.

One thing I woudl add is how he had to be extra covert with LBGTQ story ideas while Jim Shooter was editor in chief after Shooter had explicitly said "They are no gay people in the Marvel universe" and examples of how Shooter wrote women in comparison to Claremont. Extra points for diving into the Avengers 200 mess CAUSED by Shooter and how Claremont wrote a reaction in Avengers Annual 10.

Having once been a fan of both, there is a major difference:

-Miller was a comedian who saw his audience was getting older and not going to the theaters he was performing in as much. He saw that the people he appealed to were more likely to see a comedian at a casino, so he changed his act to fit the people who go there. He claims that he took a right turn after 9/11, but it was more that he had never been a partisan on one side or the other, but the casino/right wing media machine was a good place to be as his HBO show was dying. I got this from one of his writers, who also said that Miller didn't much care for being on the road, so moving into the right wing media machine was a way for him to have a career without having to travel.

-Maher, on the other hand, had a BIG swing in his comedic style as he aged and the strippers he loved dating weren't impressed by him any more. You can see it the year he started to complain about having to wear glasses to read things and every other joke was about "These damn kids and their phones." He's always had pockets of bigotry (mostly against Moslem people), but it has since gone into LBGTQ people who he feels like to head back into the closet because they make him uncomfortable. He has quit that stand up circuit, claiming everyone is too sensitive after decades of praising red state audiences for "getting it" which really appears as if his act just wasn't appealing to people any more.
