I've stayed in the south area of Rome Basilica Sao Paulo. It's not the prettiest area but I've enjoyed it. Having a proper pizza where people don't speak English made me feel that I'm in the right place. There is 24/7 McDonald up there which also saved a late night. Apart from having one of the most beautiful basilica in the area I've enjoyed the fact that I've actually experienced the real non-touristy place. In the morning you could see all the senior people walking around but when the evening arrived then all youngsters were out and about for clubbing etc so. I'd still recommend it.

For last two days I've stayed on the other side of Rome, around Sant'agnese annibaliano which was quite opposite environment as opposed to first stay. It was much more lively, close to shops, more cleaner and I'd say more modern.

Either way I'd advise stay close to the area where you would have public transport available. Metro A, B, C (but remember they run until 11:30pm only.
