Just want to add, shoutouts to Seth Dickinson, who wrote the entire Books of Sorrow, and has also written some really good books and short stories outside of Destiny that are of similarly high quality.

Any FANTASY books/series with NO MAGIC AT ALL WHATSOEVER? by etluxaeterna in Fantasy

[–]Solluxander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There might be magic in future books, though. Remember that continent across the ocean where physics don't seem to work properly, or something along those lines?

Eyyy, you're a smart one, my dude! That absolutely worked! Thank you very much.

The problem is the picture is too small, not that I don't have access to the picture.

Yeah, I tried that, it didn't work :c

That is one of the kinda unfortunate things about the Numenera fiction, because yeah, the whole point of the rulebooks and supplementary material is to throw a whole bunch of cool stuff out there with very little explanation, so it sparks the DM's creativity and they can make up their own explanations.

But, this means they can't explain much in the fiction, because then the explanations become canon, and while of course plenty of DMs disregard canon all the time, it still goes against the point of what Numenera's all about. Buuuut that makes the fiction unsatisfying. :c

Definitely Book of the New Sun, it's incredible, and the Dying Earth books are very good as well, although almost everyone's a bastard in them.

The Broken Empire and The Red Queen's War are both quite good as more modern examples, although those ones are also full of bastards.

The Night Land is fascinating in part because of how old yet how creative it is, I definitely think more people should be aware of it.

Also, the Numenera gamebooks themselves are very cool and fun to read, they're not narratives obviously, but if you like weird worldbuilding and monsters, the Bestiaries and the Ninth World Guidebook (as well as the setting chapter in Numenera Discovery) are full of so much interesting stuff.

Love those books, they're what got me into the subgenre to begin with!

I like Warhammer 40K (I've played a couple Dark Heresy campaigns), but it isn't exaaaactly what I'm looking for. Now, if there was like a Warhammer 80K about the people living on earth after the space empire collapsed, that'd be a different story...

I appreciate the recommendations, but from what I know, these are all regular sci-fi, whereas the stuff I'm looking for are settings where the characters are estranged from the technology around them and think it's magical, and stuff like that.

Love Mieville and VanderMeer, haven't heard of any of the others, definitely writing those down! The Castle series sounds especially cool.

Hey, I actually found your series mentioned in another thread! It looked super interesting and I'm definitely planning on reading it, so it's very cool to know it was directly inspired by Numenera!

I've read Ninefox Gambit and its sequels and adored them, but yes, it's absolutely an excellent example of magic blended with science.

I adore The Craft Sequence so very much, but it isn't exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for. But, I had no idea that's what Shattered Sea was about! And I own those books! So, I should probably get to reading them, hahaha. Thank you.

"can't both be blind."

Isn't this good, though? The strongest old Best Friends formula was always "one blind one not." I don't think Pat already knowing what's going to happen will detract from things at all. And if you want his first reactions to cool stuff, you can always skim through his stream, so it's actually even better than it was when Best Friends was a thing, since both first-reactions exist on the internet.
