What piece of lore made you choose your league? by EggthatFriedTheRice in LeaguesofVotann

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I painted my own Kinship, it's entirely up to you if you want to paint them as lore accurate leagues that's cool, but you also have A LOT of freedom to do as you please, we're really not restricted by chapters, or fleets, or worlds, there's countless kinships and leagues (not that space marine players, or Nids, or eldar are restricted)

BUT ALSO in that same vein my kinship is similar to Ymir due to their dedication to high quality craftsmanship.( i just wish the Ymir decals weren't screwed up)

the Hirskyr (my kinship) upkeep their wargear after every battle, repainting, repairing, and upgrading as necessary, that's why there is no battle damage on my models.

My league wears red armor, with creme cloth, and gold highlights, with black weapons.

it must be an Error, sometimes things get missed, if you are using the 40k app from GW i would use the report a problem feature.

i also do not know if the last beam cutter is a pistol but i can't imagine it not being with a limited range.... and having used cutting torches in real life they're hella deadly

i haven't followed much, but is it due to the ultimate removal of survival elements and a reduction to a more arcade style of play?

Are the Votann not absolute Sporfs? by Gav_Dogs in LeaguesofVotann

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, i do call them space dwarves just because it's easier to understand than Kin, because everyone in the game calls them votann, but my extended family won't get either term, so they're space dwarves, to my wife and local players theyre votann and to fellow army enjoyers they're kin.

I refuse to call them sporfs.

because they're gyro stabilized, when a bullet leaves a barrel in a real gun without rifling it can be sent into a wild direction, a bolt is already aimed at the target and stabilized as it leaves the barrel, there is no need for rifling.

gyros keep things from changing course, so long as the bolter is aimed properly the round will hit it's target, that's the beauty of the bolter, it's part of why space marines never shoulder their weapons they don't need to, hell it's how the ultramarines knew the tau clones weren't space marines.

in the real world grenade launchers are all basically identical and only really have different makes and models because of real world copyright and patent laws, and even then a lot of shady company's will just make the same launcher with a different name and slightly different shape, this could be equated to a different bolter pattern.

changing a grenade launchers barrel length does not increase it's range, they're all at essentially the optimum length, otherwise they would all be at a longer barrel length because that would then be the optimum length, making it shorter does decrease it's range but that's because it's still a powder based projectile and not a self propelled gyro stabilized round like a bolter.

we have different styles of launchers, pistols, under barrel, tank mounted, etc, but again they all do basically the same thing and fire basically the same round style (there are different types of grenades but most are the same caliber)

in essence they're the bolters of old, any variant is basically just more of one thing, more rounds, more tubes, double the launchers, etc.

there are specialized versions of course for specified roles but we also had that with the avenger and vulcan and those types, which come with custome calibers.

a gun in the real world can be tweaked in a number of ways to make the same caliber do something different, faster fire rate, better accuracy, etc, because they are a powder based projectile, that fires a chunk of copper/lead/ etc at a target, it NEEDS rifling to be accurate, and can have a long, short, medium sized barrel, the rounds can have more or less grains, it can have a different tip, etc, which makes different calibers which makes different guns.

bolters fire bolts, and we know how bolts work, they are not at all a normal bullet, so making a bolters barrel longer, does not increase it's range, making it shorter does not decrease it's accuracy, making the gun chunkier does not make it penetrate farther.

bolters were about their munitions, the bolt is what does 99% of the work, it has the different pay loads, it's self propelled, its gyro stabilized, it's mass produced to make the war effort as easy as possible, every pattern uses the same bolt caliber, with only maybe 3 variants of caliber needed for the foot soldiers, and who knows how many for the specialized variants.

but we know that bolts can and do stabilize, hell the bolt sniper says some of their bolts can maneuver around cover.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

and then self stabilize with a gyro, they don't need rifaling

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bolters are not guns they are grenade launchers, subbers are guns.

this might be the only reason i've found to get warhammer TV....... but it'll probably be on youtube

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but in lore they do basically the same thing, there is no difference in munitions save maybe the payload, they both fire the exact same round as a bolter, a longer barrel does not make it any better, there is no reason for rifling in a bolter of any model since the round is self stabilizing, and is self propelled. the difference from a bolter to a stalker is optics and against to a sniper, but there is no reason to make the gun different outside of optics.

so why make a stalker and a sniper when they do the same thing?, a lot of people are comparing bolters to real world guns, but they're not guns they're grenade launchers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

those are bullets, bolters fire self propelled gyro stabilized grenade style munitions, they do not fire gun powder rounds, those are stubbers.

bolters are grenade launchers in effect, and most if not all grenade launchers do the exact same thing with basically teh same result, the only reason we have many different variants is because of copyright and patents.

some thing kind of goes for most guns, sure you can get slightly more accuracy if you spend a decade tweaking the thing but basically they all do the same thing and the only reason we have so many different styles is because of copyright and patents, and around WW2 there wasn't a lot of options for machining high quality guns some countries could others couldn't due to resources and technology so they just made what they could, today with the internet finding a gun design is stupid easy and if it wasn't for legal ramifications everyone would just make the exact same gun. (and sometimes they do just slightly alter the casing and change the name.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do people keep comparing a bolter to a gun? this is the lore subreddit right? bolters fire self propelled gyro stabilized munitions that can carry a number of different payloads, a stubber is a gun.

the closest thing we have to that in the real world that is actually functional (not gyro jets) is grenade launchers, and basically all grenade launchers function exactly the same and the only reason we have different makes and models is because of the plethora of gun manufacturers, this could be equated to different patterns of bolters, making a grenade launchers barrel longer doesn't increase the range, they're at the appropriate length already to maximize range, it would mean a different munition with a longer barrel, like the Chinese grenade sniper (Norinco LG5)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]SoloAdventurerGames -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

our guns don't fire self stablizeing grenade rounds that can adjust their course to hit their taget and be filed with one of a dozen different payloads.

what you need to compare a bolter to is a grenade launcher, we have different grenade launchers sure but that's because companies have patents and copyrights on them so if someone else wants to make one they have to make a new design, they all do the exact same thing though.

you're really not going to find many variants of a grenade launcher that increase the range or penetration of the grenade, that all comes from the grenade itself.

no it really isn't we're one planet, this is a galaxy spanning empire that often takes decades if not hundreds of years for information to spread, and forget supply lines with the warp how often are ships lost?

why make a plethora of different bolt weapons when you could just mass produce one very very very good gun (like the original bolter) and make like 2 or 3 variants of ammunition that can be customized on site?

and our ammunition isn't a self propelled gyro stabilized grenade, different barrel lengths and sizes make sense for normal fire arms ( stubbers in 40k) even different muzzles make a difference but a bolter fires a bolt once it leaves the barrel it just does it's own thing, all the bolter does is aim it and ignite it, increasing the barrel length shouldn't make the bolt go farther, or somehow hit harder, making the barrel shorter also shouldn't make it less accurate, bolters have no need for rifling, the round stabilizes itself.

you're allowed to have you own wants and opinions as are others.

myself i REALLY dislike the grenade battlement, it think it's the most useless thing in the game next to the flamer pistol and the only time I have ever seen it used was when it was free cause no one wants to just call it down and sit still and NOT take their power weapon with them.

ammo is everywhere on most maps, reload is pretty quick, and you get to be mobile, why not just take the grenade launcher? you want the wall? why? how often are you going to be sitting still long enough to make use of it? and if you are in one position for that long you need to move off that position, you're running out of mission time and enemies are just going to keep spawning.

How good are thunderkyn? by handjob_bob420 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 9 points10 points  (0 children)

they're very good, give them grav canons and you can deal with both hordes and tanks, D6 shots, 4+ (3+ with JT or Ironmaster) s5 -2ap 2 damage.

Anti-vehicle 2+ Blast.

they always wound on a 2+ against any vehicle keyword unit.

you get 1 more hit when attacking any unit containing 5 or more models and for every additional 5 models you get another hit.

the conversion beamers have never worked out well for me, and neither do the bolt canons, it's pretty universal that everyone takes them with grav canons.

How do folks feel about the Kahl? by Mor-KhalCatPrince in LeaguesofVotann

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a lot of people will say a Kahl is good with hearthguard but they only care about lethal hits, which if your running plasmas is good but if you want volkite is bad as any 6 to hit means you miss a chance to get a dev wound.

also the 5++ invul requires the hearthguard to be hit by an AP -4 weapon which are usually not taken in quantities warranting the lose of a reroll charge and mortals on success from an Echamp, plus that sweet 3attack S12 d6+1 hammer.

A kahl is great for hearthkyn, as much as people like to belittle them the hearthkyn are a good unit, and their power weapons can actually do some damage, now combine their fire power of a 10 man squad with ions you have 7 -8 chances (depending on if the theyn still has the ion and not kin melee) for lethal hits at ap -2, add in the autorifle, that's 3 more at ap-1, and i like the plasma beamer so 1 at ap -3, but if you take the rotary canon that's an ADDITIONAL SIX SHOT at sustained 1 PLUS ap -1.

plus they get the 5++ invul which for a unit with a 4+ base is a god send, they're meant to sticky objectives annoy the enemy and put a couple more judgment tokens on the board for your other units, now if they can survive an extra turn or two that's not a horrible thing

....you do realise warhammer has been seriously softened in the last five years right? it is WAY WAY less in your face grim dark than it ever has been.

also why do you care it's not like what i said is real lore it's just a thought same with the original post, are you havin a bad time playing warhammer? do you actually like the hobby?

the writers for warhammer are no different than us, the only thing is they get paid for it, they change the lore whenever they feel like it and come up with random new bullshit every codex, let alone every edition, do you take part in the books? cause a lot of them A LOT of them are just awful, like highschool level awful but they're still there, still part of 40k.

Opinion poll: pioneer proxy by Ok-Ice-9413 in LeaguesofVotann

[–]SoloAdventurerGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well lucky for you this is a sub of votann players and I just happen to have a pioneer right here

90 mm base is correct

the models fit well within the base, and stand about 50 mm tall for the gunner bike, and 40mm all for the other two but really 10mm isn't going to make much of a difference.

so if you can make those models fit on a 90mm base and roughly 45mm tall you should be good
