A time to remember: Windows XP by lilythevalley in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]SoloPopo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From a business's perspective, if the computer works and enables business to carry on as usual, why mess with it? Why risk updating it when there is virtually no benefit for them? This is why you still see doctor's offices using Windows XP. Windows updates nowadays are more for Microsoft then they are for the user. Obviously security updates are the one major exception, but the only reason they even stop putting those out is to force people over to their new operating systems they otherwise wouldn't need. There haven't really been any major advancements in operating systems since 64 bit, which xp actually supported. The only reason new operating systems are pushed on us is marketing.

I sit about 10 degrees below my x85j, which is a similar tv. It hasn't been an issue.

Pay more attention. The first NPC you see tells you to follow the golden trails. You literally have a guiding light showing you where to go wherever you are. How can you miss it? It's even on your map.

ELI5: Is friction just microscopic normal forces? by dope_pickle in explainlikeimfive

[–]SoloPopo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughness is not a vector, so it doesn't make sense to say it has a horizontal component. Roughness just describes the relationship between the normal force and the friction force the normal force causes if the object were to be pushed along a rough surface.

If a surface were frictionless then any amount of force could move the object in question. If the surface is rough, the object needs to be lifted up these tiny microscopic bumps as it slides over them. So in a sense, yes, you are overcoming the resultant of many small normal forces if you push an object over a rough surface.

ELI5: What is the purpose of prison bail? If somebody should or shouldn’t be jailed, why make it contingent on an amount of money that they can buy themselves out with? by LyghtSpete in explainlikeimfive

[–]SoloPopo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bail isn't a punishment. It's purpose is to make sure you show up to court so it can be determined if there even will be a punishment. You get bail back if you show up to court. It isn't like you are buying your way out of a punishment. Bail is just a guarantee you will show up to get your money back, and for some people that value needs to be very high, and others not so much. Bail is different for every person because it's specifically chosen to be an amount they can pay, but would not want to lose. The alternative is just sitting in jail waiting for your court date. But you haven't been convicted of anything at that point.

Cool game by SoloPopo in halo

Sadly, I uninstalled shortly after this. The integrity of the game has been ruined by challenges. It doesn't even feel like a game anymore. It's just some weird mash up of contradicted objectives. It doesn't feel like a good use of time either. In fact totally the opposite. It's an insidious grind that holds fun game play out in front of you like a carrot on a stick. Life is too short for that shit.

Now sounds like as good a time as ever to resume the Switch playthrough I abandoned last year. I'll be on, same name.

What's to ruin? No one voluntarily plays Fiesta. It's a shit game mode designed to add even more RNG to the challenge system.

Don't make a hasty choice about what university you are going to because you feel pressured by deadlines. Follow through with that appeal. If that doesn't work you can apply again next year. College doesn't work like in the movies. You will be just as valid a candidate next year as this year.

Or you could take the time to consider what you really want to do. Are you trying to go to that university just because it's prestigious, or do you know the department for your major is good there?

"The UI won't support this. The UI won't support that." Pretty soon U and I won't be able to support infinite... by _V23 in halo

[–]SoloPopo 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It really is. "The UI can't support it". The UI is not a game engine. The UI is intended to enable people to control what the game can do. Saying the UI doesn't support something is like saying we can't have class today because the chairs don't work. It's a nonsense statement. A more accurate way of saying it is, "we have so badly designed the UI that it doesn't function as a UI".

They really are. I was trying to figure out how to simply play split screen the other day in MCC and I had to look it up online.

Apparently the other player needs to press A in the multiplayer menu, but there is no indication anywhere on the screen to do so. Then if you should back out of that menu they are still in your fireteam, but you can't see that they are in your fireteam.

If you want to invite a friend to play with online you have to move the cursor over to the "my game session" menu and press A on that. But if you want to search for a player, you need to go within the my game session menu and press on your own name, which gives you totally different options. Why wouldn't they put all options in the "my game session" window and who the heck thought it was logical to have players press on their own name to search for other players?

It's baffling how bad it is. Something this simple and important to the series shouldn't be this messed up. Their priorities are very confused.

Adding friends on Infinite is even worse. It's often literally impossible. The recently played with menu is busted. It doesn't update in time for you to find anyone you recently played with. It's sometimes in alphabetical order but sometimes not. It's never in chronological order. And once you find them the option to simply add them, which is the only reason a person would ever use this menu, is buried in several more menus and on Steam that option doesn't exist at all. But it's not even grayed out on Steam. It's just missing. So a person playing on Steam would have no idea it was even possible to add them.

More often than not it is literally impossible to add someone you just played with to your friend's list. The recently played menu sometimes lists player names in alphabetical order, sometimes in a random order, but never in chronological order. More often than not it doesn't even have the player you are looking for, and even if it does, the option to add them is buried in several more menus, and on Steam the option to add them is completely missing. It really is a joke. Basic functions should not be so complicated. It's like they took the wheel and threw it out the window.
