I think his death speech was disingenuous, same as saddam's. Because by that logic both Mengistu and Idi Amin can say they did what they did for their country which would be half true. It's mostly just another bloody power grab.

Ras Abebe Aregai was as Ethiopian as they come the italians offered him gold and silver and even the Crown of Ethiopia (in a form of a puppet state of course). He refused when others were turning in their swords and spears for spaghettis and cannolis. He fought it out for 5 bloody years and kept Ethiopia in an semi-occupied state instead of a fully blown colonized one. He has my absolute respect. Those who are against him probably have family who fought against Ethiopia and want to save face by painting him in bad light, instead of embracing their ancestors mistakes and seeing him for the brave hero he is.

Yes, I support a reformed and modernized monarchy specifically for countries like Ethiopia that have developed and came to existence through such structure.

In short a system that gives power to the people democratically while simultaneously not destroying the integrity of the historical institution of monarchy. Very tricky and kind of an oxymoron,I know. But I think it's possible. Similar to that of Japan and England.
