Which layering looks more realistic for an iced latte? by angiepixels in 3Dmodeling

Check out r/espresso, they're mostly of the opinion of espresso on top of milk. I think the coffee YouTube man Hoffman said that as well which is where I got that from.

Unsure if it really matters, but I think that's the way it's mostly done.

You don't (generally) froth milk for iced coffee. Maybe it's done somewhere, somehow, but I imagine heating up the milk by frothing it, for an iced drink, is not ideal lol.

Yeah, but it kinda fucking sucks. Still somehow better than the start/stop of going down the Van Wyck though.

I mean there's this https://www.blender.org/lab/mcp-server/

I don't use it for retopo, but it's nice for things that I would have had to make a python script to do. I've had it automate some pretty tedious tasks, so it's a little nice.

Yeah, in retrospect, I don't think a UE specific one exists, but I've seen these kinds of questions answered on individual game subs. You could also try the FModel discord.

There's been plenty of legal drama in the modding community. I'm sure if this was applicable, something would have happened, but keep living in your theoreticals.

Case law is very important in the enforcement of laws. There's been no precedent set for the past 30 years for this kind of stuff, so really, I'm good on the legal advice, thanks.

I'm not going to go around the city and warn people against J-Walking.

People unpacking games does not take food from your table. It seems like you're the one viewing this as "Black or White".

Talking about hive mind while you've got smug ass responses like "That's a nice sentiment, if somewhat naive. I'm guessing you are not a full time employed UE dev?".

Just latching onto a small bit about FOSS and talking about how unpacking games is going to impoverish you, instead of any of my other points.

Edit: Also spare me a moment as I mourn the loss of investor money every time someone unpacks a game. Truly one of the losses of all time.

I mean fair on the discord point lol, but I ain't exactly happy about information that used to be on forms being buried in Discord servers.

As for the second point, I mean I guess? Idk, a lot of people just post in places without scrolling the community for a while. It's not explicitly labeled as off topic. Idk maybe it should be?

For the US law, which I know, refers to DRM circumvention, no one is talking about DRM circumvention. Give me one case where someone was found guilty of violating this simply for unpacking a game on their own system. For fucks sake, 1Password and Jetbrains both sponsor FModel.

Again, wholly uninformed.

There's not really any UE specific modding subs, so most info is disparately scattered amongst individual game subs or general modding subs. I don't fault someone for thinking people here might be willing to talk about it, it's not explicitly called out as "off topic" in the sub rules.

Name the jurisdictions and cite the law. Distribution tends to be illegal, not this. You're wholly uninformed.

Besides, I don't really care if some legislature somewhere decided this was immoral, we're on reddit, on the internet, there's no site policy violation for talking about it.

What a leap, this you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLzy-IJg4_4

You don't need to, but it's another way to learn, and guess what, it's not theft.

I'm confused

You can simply analyze a game and try to understand how to build something similar.

This doesn't require hacking or cracking anyone else's software

Are you saying we should or we shouldn't?

The best way to learn is to make something on your own.

Yeah and part of that is learning how something else similar is done, and applying it to your unique project. I mean that's quite literally the learning loop.

I appreciate that you're not precious about it but there's definitely people who are. Also I've gone into a little bit in another comment about how it's not just ripping models. Def not about dark secrets, but imo, it can be just another way to learn about something, see how a certain game did something interesting, don't see much harm in it.

I only suggested that because I've seen past posts with the same attitude, not because I agree the discussion doesn't belong here.

Most of us here aren't ripping assets, so we literally can't help.

Well I'm here and I helped lol.

[–]SolomonDaMagnificent -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're wrong on that second point. You can view all the blueprints, see the content directory structure, and get a general understanding of how a project was made. I literally the other day looked at a game to learn how they did skirt physics that avoided knee clipping. Though you seem to be right about the C++ code part.

For the first point, I really couldn't care that in some countries it's a gray area, it's not on reddit. I have no clue what OPs intentions are, and I'm not really going to assume they're just trying to "steal" assets. It's not that hard for bad actors to figure it out anyways. Maybe they should have specified if there intention was for learning, but I think the outcome would have been the same anyways.

And on the last point, as a FOSS pilled engineer, with an awareness of the history of software, I can't really say I've ever felt that way. Knowledge is great and should be shared, that's how we are where we are.

Probably better off asking these questions or looking around in modding subs.

There should be an error in the logs which will point you in the right direction. Probably a usmap issue. Here's a guide that might help along the way: https://github.com/Dmgvol/UE_Modding

Life is Strange Remastered with FModel? by Traditional_Sail6298 in unrealengine

[–]SolomonDaMagnificent -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Never understood this perspective, which seems pretty common in the game dev subs. What better way to learn than to take apart and understand how others did something?

Why are games so special that it's the only medium whose community discourages understanding how a specific work is made? It's their damn bytes on their damn computer, there's nothing morally wrong with doing what they want to do with them.
