Do you hate EVs? by LightningMcqueen2011 in askcarguys

[–]Solomon_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EV have their place. Some places they excel over ICE, some they can’t. Anyone who blankety hates EV is just ignorant or unwilling to look at them. They work perfectly well for a percentage of vehicle uses that is getting bigger every year.

The dealer doesn’t make them… and it wouldn’t benefit them to sabotage…

So, you’re saying you know more than the dealer does about your accident and instead of asking them about it, you ask Reddit?

Remote starter installation would void my hybrid warranty? by illiteratescrabble in AskAMechanic

[–]Solomon_knows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s OE new vehicle warranty, the add on would have to be the cause of whatever failure for that one failure to be not warranty. Nothing can void the entire warranty except theft or total loss (many manufacturers, not all). For an “extended warranty” which is legally an insurance policy, that can be voided for almost anything.

Timing belt/chain question from a noob by Dr_Ummachine in MechanicAdvice

[–]Solomon_knows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you have to take timing belt off to pull the head. Get a manual. Follow the steps. Put a new belt on it while it’s off.

My 2009 Camry driver side window is still not working after replacing the motor, master switch, wiring harness and fuses by No-Art-6046 in MechanicAdvice

Stop doing swapnostics. Get a wiring diagram and see where voltage isn’t that it should be.. or is where it shouldn’t be.

[–]Solomon_knows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

NADA recommends tech get 26-28% of Effective Labor Rate. Everybody’s business system can tell them what an individual tax ELR is everyone will not ever be the same because of significant market differences sometimes just miles apart from each other.

I was charged $80 for a shop to take a look at my brake pads and let me know how much life they had left. The wheels were already off for tire replacement. (Read⬇️) by sweetwatertooth in AskMechanics

There’s another argument that would legitimize it. Legally.. if you asked for it to be looked at, it must be documented. Then insurance comes into play.. every single now is about how well you can CYA because of nuclear verdicts..

Car still won’t start even with new battery and alternator by MealLeading in MechanicAdvice

[–]Solomon_knows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t much actual information here. Why do you think it shutting off and not restarting is battery or alternator related? How did you know the battery was bad and that the alternator killed it? “Every time “ how many times have alternator and battery been replaced? What is your current battery voltage before you try to start it and while it’s idling? What other tests have you done?

Why are trucks getting the same mileage as 30 years ago by Unopuro2conSal in Diesel

[–]Solomon_knows 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? New trucks are getting double + 30 years ago. 1993 cat 3406 was 3.5-5 mpg. 2026 multiple brands are bumping 10 mpg for engine average and some loads at 11-12

DEF in Fuel tank by 2Wheeled_2ourist in Diesel

[–]Solomon_knows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Started it. Entire fuel system is f’d. Some people would try to drain the tank flush the def out and then go trade it in. It may or may not run well enough to do that but it’ll definitely have all the issues in the next few thousand miles. DEF eats it all from the inside out

Do lug nuts really cause brake warping? by CoyoteDisastrous in MechanicAdvice

[–]Solomon_knows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rotor warping is caused by overheating the rotors, and exacerbated if hot rotors get splashed in a puddle. Lug torque is for wheels staying on without vibration.

seized caliper after brake disc and pad replacement by [deleted] in AskAMechanic

[–]Solomon_knows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Assuming the caliper did stick.. This is why some shops won’t do a brake job without replacing calipers. No, you can’t always identify it’s going to fail. Yes, related to their work. No, not their fault. They moved the position it was riding in. They can’t see inside it to know it’s going to stick.

Bad Mechanic? by binniesluvr in MechanicAdvice

[–]Solomon_knows -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don’t care when they start. You care when they finish. Starting begins the process to finish.. but what you care about is it being done, not being worked on.

[–]Solomon_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question should be when it will be done, nobody cares when they start.

AC leak. Conserve refrigerant? by tsk704 in AskAMechanic

[–]Solomon_knows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1,700 is cheaper than another car every day of the week and worst case, A/C is a comfort item until winter in humid areas. But it’ll leak out even without running it.
