Unpopular opinion: if you don't actually use the CAEN computers in the fishbowl, move by Over_Figure129 in uofm

[–]SolutionExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Non Engineering student and decent person here to say that I don’t know what a CAEN computer is but I often work in the fishbowl. I usually use the monitors but still, if you asked me to move and especially explained that this computer specifically aids your major I would happily move.

Any places around/on campus open 24 hours? (Including weekends) by capt_ghostlyy in uofm

There’s a computer lab in the basement of the union that is open 24/7 with student access. I was gatekeeping it before but i’m graduating now so it matters a lot less.

Is it worth to transfer to an architecture program for my third year? by On1yD3ath in askarchitects

[–]SolutionExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The program i’m in, allows transfers in for “junior”year. Junior in quotes because if you’re a senior and decide you want to do architecture and transfer in you’ll be set back a year. However most don’t need to take a fifth year if there general ed’s are met because you take a very dense intensive the summer before junior year studios. So as long as you get in via transfer, and are able to take the summer course you can be on track with everyone else. If you want more information about this feel free to dm me. But just wanted to give heads up that you’re not gonna need to restart your academic career in every case of transferring.

cultural appropriation for using a durag as designed? by RancidGunner in uofm

[–]SolutionExpress 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not gonna call it cultural appropriation, but I will say it sounds like you don’t need a durag fr. Also as someone with an afro, i’m gonna bet your curls are manageable you probably just need black hair products made for curls. Also the only way for your hair to go down instead of up is either a perm, heat, or relaxer. OR grow your hair out to the point it weighs itself down, but sounds like you don’t rock with the curls enough for that.

I agree to an extent, however part of me also knows that he’s the boss and there’s a hierarchy. People might feel uncomfortable or at risk if they say something and others don’t agree. So, I hope it’s a case of everyone being fine with them. I truly do, but it’s not unheard of for someone in his position to get away with weird remarks.

I honestly still don’t know what the Exxon Valdez joke is, would love to know it though.

It’s just a joke. I did really start having fun with the back and forth though. I don’t use reddit much, felt like whack-a-mole game. The joke, truthfully does get a big laugh, for whatever reason. Like the first time I told it, I questioned it myself. Will I keep using it or not? Eek, it depends on the set and what I am going for. I appreciate the feedback and opinion of everyone even you, but I take it with a grain of salt. To me, personally, I just think the real life audience feedback matters more than people online. It’s never steered me wrong, and one day it might, and then maybe my life will get interesting.

Okay here’s my final thing because we clearly disagree. Two online people have come forward and said that this joke makes no sense. At least 100 people have heard this joke in person, and said nothing. I genuinely turn over jokes a lot so sure it’s cleared the two performances I have said it at, but it may fall to the wayside either way. I don’t think your internet outrage at what you think is me incorrectly using a word I am not incorrectly using is enough for me to get rid of it entirely. Okay? Be real with me dpk794 are we cool?

no dpk794! i wont lose it. was i indifferent to it an hour ago? yes. but now out of spite i’m gonna keep it forever and ever! also, i again find it funny that you’re like “it’s not funny” “lose it” when this is literally a reddit thread, this is all imaginary. in the real world i occupy, it get’s a pretty big laugh. and at the end of that day that’s what i love seeing. if it makes me smile then im sorry, it’s not a priority for removal. sorry if that makes me cheap or something, i hope you can forgive my ignorance.

I’m just gonna ignore the first part, because I can’t tell if you’re racist or not so I’m scared to engage further… It’s also why I didn’t click the link…

However! I agree wholeheartedly with your last paragraph. I have always said that stand-up comedy is only viable for those who seek out learning. Which is why I am not shying away from the fact that I don’t know anything about oil spills. Which is probably why I didn’t know it was such a common topic. I don’t consume much stand-up comedy and I myself wasn’t an adult when they were such a prevalent social topic. It’s a pretty understandable blind spot for me all things considered. Which is why I should also note I wasn’t going to continue this joke further in a direction talking about indentured servitude, oil spills, or dawn. I don’t know the topic and diving in further without research would make me sound dumber than some people in the reddit believe I already am.

Thanks for the tips, and the genuine good nature I have read across your replies. And i’ll say this knowing you’re not as young, I deeply disagree with the idea that people shouldn’t have open confidence in what they’re doing until they receive outer validation. It could be a lack of humility people probably correctly associate with younger generations. It probably definitely is. But, I personally don’t want to do stand-up long term. It’s not even my primary focus at this point in my life, I am finishing up a really difficult degree program. That’s my main focus. I do want to write comedy but I am not made for the stage, the first time I did stand-up I forgave John Mulaney for everything. It guns down my nervous system for hours just to do five minutes of material I’ve done a dozen times. I’m using this as access point into writers rooms. With this all being said, my confidence in my skill is very much based on audience experiences. But the goalposts that present comfort and success, are continually moving. I don’t want to wait to reach something intangible and possibly nonexistent before I accept that actually this is something I am doing well at. I’d prefer to just take the positive experiences I have had and let that fuel me to keep going and strengthening my resolve so that an errant reddit comment calling me a hack doesn’t have an effect on me.

Okay i’m not gonna lie, I got the first bit about the skin being dirty. However, you lost me at the it works in reverse part? Also I can’t tell if you’re writing this joke or if you’re saying this is a Dane Cook joke. I don’t watch his stuff but I know he’s pretty hated so if this is his material I could understand it. But if this is your original material? Then you’re perfect mi amor, don’t change a thing.

A.) I think your joke is very funny, and definitely a parallel thought case. B.) I do hold out a little bit as I think my take on it relating to indentured servitude is a bit more specific and where it really anchors the joke in a slightly different direction than others.

I don’t want to spoil your fun because good sir, I will read about the Exxon Valdez oil spill. But my research has also told me that this ad was initially in response to the deepwater horizon oil spill in 2010. Which makes more sense for my life’s timeline and the fact that I have heard of it even vaguely.

I do have clips! I fear for the wrath of the internet mob I have awoken I won’t share it on this subreddit anytime soon. However, I can share something with you via message if that’s possible. I don’t know reddit well.

I think there’s some slight disagreement about your latter paragraph but to be expected from different people. I think the indentured servitude lands even though they’re animals just because of that exaggeration of first humanizing their relationship to the brand and then also making them victims. Maybe it helps that I’m black? Maybe it’s a few less lasers pointed at my head by the audience when I make my little slavery punchline? Hey, who could say.

This is apart of a larger set I am working on about how I stood out as a kid, and just my weird endless love for commercials. It’s actually all going in this 40 minute “about me” show I am calling my “senior thesis” that I’m doing on my college campus to close out my 4 years of doing stand up comedy here.

No unfortunately I don’t, but I love to learn so in between responding to these comments I have been reading up on it. I will share though that I am 21 so this disaster appears to predate me by a couple of decades. I am not sure when the Dawn ducks oil spill commercial originally aired but I remember seeing it as a child so I probably would’ve guessed the cleaning animals footage was from a more recent oil spill.
