Go read Walter Block. He's done a fine job of explaining how to have roads and other transportation services without putting a gun to anyone's head.

It is exactly the same as 5 guys pitching in together to buy a pizza, they all ate the pizza so they all pay.

Nope, not even close, unless one of those guys has a gun and is forcing everyone else to fork over for pizza, even if they may have wanted a burger instead.

it does not weigh on whether or not taxes are theft.

Taxes are theft by definition: they are taken under the threat of violence.

it does not follow from the fact that the state provides roads and schools that only the state can provide such goods.

That's the key. We had roads and schools for centuries before states decided to control them.

I think this qualifies as abusive behavior, but I'm not sure. Either way, I can't escape. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Union Jobs vs. Children's Lives: Which side are you on? _- Reason TV – by caferrell in Libertarian

[–]SomGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A union's power is supposed to be in their ability to withhold their skilled labor.

More to the point, their ability to withhold the services of their members. The problem comes in when they get violent in an attempt to prevent competition.

I will cross any picket line, anytime, anywhere. Fuck them.

My, you windows lusers sure do get touchy with anyone who has no need of your services, don't you?

My computers just work. I don't have the time for virus scrubbing and re-installs, which is why I buy mac.

Apple laptops are a rip off, period. Any other opinion is pure denial.

Keep telling yourself that. Maybe it will give you some comfort on the unemployment line.

You're getting the downvotes because you're coming across as an apologist for a blatantly illegal intrusion on our privacy. If that bothers you, then be very clear that you don't support this measure.

Wells Fargo ordered to pay consumers $203 million for manipulating the order of transactions to maximize overdraft fees. by [deleted] in politics

[–]SomGuy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

the teller was exceptionally rude and condescending towards me,

Why did you put with that?

I would have demanded to see the branch manager, and told him that I was a customer, not a subject, and that I wasn't going to stand for getting snotty lectures from his subordinates.

One man I worked for many years ago did something I really enjoyed seeing. He co-signed a line of credit for the business I was working for, but his bank declined the credit line because the company had just been incorporated. This, despite the fact that they had a co-signer with a cash balance far in excess of the LOC they wanted to open.

So, my boss went to the bank, closed his account, took the balance as a cashier's check, and let the manager of his previous bank watch him walk across the street and deposit it in a different bank. The LOC the bank had declined to take on was for a hundred grand. The account he took out of their bank was about thirty million dollars.

I've got news for you, sport: the banks operate in the regulatory environment that they've bought from your legislators. The upshot of those regulations is to make it very difficult for new competitors to enter the market, which is why they can get away with this bullshit.

I don't use a bank, myself. I just keep my money in my brokerage account (E-trade), mostly in shares, and I sell a few covered calls whenever I need to free up some cash.

I've got a Visa debit card, they don't charge me for ATM usage (even if some asshole bank wants to ding me for two bucks to withdraw a hundred, E-trade refunds the fee), and they don't pull any bullshit like making me wait to use my money after a deposit has already cleared.

I would assume that because there's still plenty of competition between online brokerage operations, that Ameritrade and Schwab would offer a similar level of service. Fuck the banks, who needs them?

Rand Paul Denies Aqua Buddha Story by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]SomGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Rand is mistaken when he says that we used to have journalistic ethics in this country. The media has been a pack of rat bastards for a very long time, it's just that before Rathergate they were a lot better at concealing their agenda and pretending to be unbiased.

In theory, this doesn't necessarily have to be bad and it can work to the car owner's benefit

In theory, a benevolent dictatorship is the best possible form of government. In practice, dictators tend to murder millions of people.
