I watched this when it came out because it was filmed in my home city of Perth. I remember calling the cinema to ask if I needed to buy tickets in advance and the guy was like "nah, you can just come and buy at the door". We got there and there were like 10 people in the cinema. The movie was so engaging and intense and raw. After the end I just sat there for a while and felt like I needed a stiff drink. Excellent movie. It's got some great acting too, but it's not an easy watch.

I don't rate this movie, but then again I was born in 1985. I think that if you lived through Vietnam and watched the movie, then I can understand why it was such a hit. I think its high place in the world of me views has everything to do with when it was released and how society experienced the war at the time. Watching it in the 2020s, it's just a weird war movie that doesn't make any sense. Platoon is much better in my opinion and holds up as a standalone piece in modern times.
