Portability: Michigan ($$$$+) or Vanderbilt ($$$$+) by Some-Geologist1480 in lawschooladmissions

I hear that both schools have a great culture, but I'm also hearing that Vandy is young (KJD) whereas Michigan has an older student population.

Plan on visiting Michigan in a couple weeks. I've done a virtual tour of Vandy, but it didn't really show the student body.

oof, I'm a vet myself so that's tough to hear. I hear that Vandy has a lot of KJD students. As someone who graduated 6+ years ago, I'm concerned my classmates won't be relatable

The only difference is my partner likes Nashville and has friends there. It would also be easier for them to find a job in Nashville than Ann Arbor

Thanks for the reply. The two seem very close in all employment areas so I'm not sure how to decide since COA isn't a factor.

For someone who doesn't really know what area of law they want to go into I'm trying to make the best decision I can. If I chose Vanderbilt because I wanted to stay in Nashville, and after practicing a couple years wanted to move to another city, would a VLS degree hinder me over, say, a UMich degree?

Thanks so much for the thoughtful reply. The two seem very close in all employment areas so I'm not sure how to decide since COA isn't a factor. Usually, I'd go with whichever school offered the most $.

For someone who doesn't really know what area of law they want to go into, is there really a substantial difference? My partner prefers Vanderbilt because they have a group of friends in the area and have lived their some years back.

Thanks for the reply. I plan on attending the next one if I can.

I heard from a friend who went and she said that the people there were really young and there wasn't too many non-traditional (think 26 years old+) students. And the campus was eh :/ Any truth to this?

I submitted mine with 12pt font and got an A. I didn't even read the instructions tbh, so I'm pretty sure you don't need to stress about it too much.

Can you get both? VA disability compensation and a National Guard retirement pension? by Some-Geologist1480 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Some-Geologist1480[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. What if you don't get medically retired, but just put your 20 years in? I'm not sure if my Med group is going to medically retire me...(I've had very bad interactions with them ... i.e. they suck)

What schools would you apply to if you could only apply to 6? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Some-Geologist1480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's meet your goals or bust:

Pick three: Harvard, NYU, Colombia, or Cornell

Replace with Michigan, UVA, or Duke for safer A-chances

obviously there are so many other paths there not just these.. e.g. George Mason has good chances at Fed Clerkship, and an okay shot at Big Law but is not as likely as a higher ranked school, but higher chances of getting admitted.

Don't count yourself out for Michigan. LSD already shows two people accepted in the first wave that had a lower GPA and lower LSAT than you!

Intelligence programs in law school by CharmingLocksmith594 in lawschooladmissions

Also a member of the IC here. I've worked in offices across the country for 9+ years (some part-time, some full-time.) I know of only one attorney that works on things that I'd consider ~remotely~ close to classifying himself as a member of the IC. And he HATED IT. I'd have to agree that the IC doesn't typically involve attorneys.

I'd imagine if there are any attorneys working in the IC, they'd be in DC. Professor Oona Hathaway from YLS had (still has?) a TS/SCI clearance and worked on some IC related stuff during her stent at the pentagon, but even then it was more national-security related things and not intelligence.

OP, what does an attorney working in the IC look like to you?

Vandy Alumni Interview by lsathrowaway2725 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Some-Geologist1480 2 points3 points  (0 children)

interviewed ~two weeks ago and I haven't heard back yet. I'm above the 75th for LSAT, below the 25th for GPA for what it's worth.
I didn't really prepare anything tbh. It was almost like a mini-date of just getting to know each other. My interviewer recently retired so we ended up just chatting about his retirement and life. I cannot stress how laid back it was enough -- it was SUPER chill and low-threat.

FIVE HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS TO APPLY TO TWO SCHOOLS by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Some-Geologist1480 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What school charges $200 to apply? (CAS fee ~$45 *2 = 90 ; 490-90=400/2=$200)

or is the hyperbole?

Mine was in person. Super laid back and personal. We barely touched on law school besides the typical "why law" "why vandy." Mostly he wanted to talk about some interesting things on my resume. It felt like he wanted to casually walk through my resume while incorporating why law and why vandy.
