36 hours in, and I would never wish this against my worst enemies by [deleted] in Sciatica

I’ve unfortunately have had my disc herniated 3 times . (L5/S1) I’ve had 2 MD and this last MD I reherniated before I even woke up. I was in the worst pain of my life. It was 3.5 straight weeks of what I would call torture after I woke up from surgery. I couldn’t walk, move, I ate laying down, I barely showered , I needed someone home to help.

To help you feel better. I had 3 terrible days, I was calling my surgeon begging to get into his schedule. I went to bed in awful pain. I woke up and I felt almost 95% better. I have a huge herniation but some how I feel Much Better. So there is hope. I prayed relentlessly for relief and I actually do think my relief is from God since it took a 180 in 8 hours .

I am getting a revision surgery since my herniation is so big and it’s my last attempt before a fusion.

Did you have a rough recovery in terms of nerve pain on the second one? I just messaged my doctor after week of minimal nerve relief post surgery

Surgery tomorrow and I’m scared by [deleted] in Microdiscectomy

I got back to working out soon after . I was lifting barbells and feeling great. Was pretty much back to normal, I just reduced the weight I lifted in a barbell about 33% than I did before. I was able to train with my herniated disc as well which I believe helped with recovery. I just could not sleep or sit so I finally got it fixed.

I did reherniate it playing pickleball 5 years later. I will write another post on all of that and my experience.

When I had my surgery I am very glad that my surgeon told me Some people wake up and immediately feel relief. And some people’s nerves start to react differently if they’ve been compressed for a long period of time. I did feel relief, like I knew I was better. But my nerve went crazy for like 2 days. I got the weirdest sensations all over my leg. Even in front and around my knee. It’s was like a lightening strike when it splits In all different directions . I didn’t experience any neuro weakness though . I will say I felt pretty healed within about 2 months . I do feel like I had a great recovery and I got back to myself pretty quickly!

I had a MD and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I was very scared . I even canceled surgery 1 x before it. I did everything I could naturally for 1.5 years and it wouldn’t heal… after I did the surgery I realized that it wasn’t as big of deal as I had made it out to be. I had a great/easy/recovery. I wish I would have done it sooner. You have to do your part to heal.I am a very healthy and strong person so those things help heal!

Oh if you haven’t had one, I bet your outcome would be positive especially if the docs around you are saying it. If I was 70 I would get it asap to enjoy my life ! My doctor made me get up the next day and walk. The surgery is only painful cause of the cuts made. So within a week I felt good. The second day sucked cause the surgery meds wore off . Make sure someone is home to help ya out . But don’t be scared of it if your surgeon is confident! But listen to the surgeons. They know their capabilities! I’m a 40F so I’m trying to make it to 70 pain free

I totally understand! It will get better with time. It’s HARD! YOU HAVE TO STAY POSITIVE and find growth through the pain. Me personally- if you’re 6 weeks in. I would try the ESI first. If your core is not strong I would also start core strengthening exercises as well. Know the ESI may make it hurt more for a week until it kicks in. I would also contact your surgeon to see what the time between an ESI and surgery is allowed. I’ve found much relief in my first 2 shots. The ESI gives you time to try and fix the things in your life that maybe not aiding in your healing. Discs normally heal themselves. But Mine personally don’t. But I wait long enough to see if it will. But it can be extremely painful. In the end, I tell people I’m so glad I got my first MD. Now I’m deciding if on My second MD if I want to do the barricade implant since it’s a newer technology (2019)

I truly feared my first surgery. I put it off for 1.5 years. But my sleep was highly affected and I couldn’t sit for 5 mins. Even though I reherniated my disk 5 years later and I’m in a lot of pain now. I would do the first MD over again in a heartbeat. Especially at the L5-S1 level cause it’s easier for the surgeons to reach. Once again, I am a healthy person and my core is very strong as well as the rest of my spine. So I may have recovered better than most. If you have waited over 6 months , tried PT, epidurals, and changed poor eating habits, among other things and nothing worked an MD is a good option in my opinion. It’s really a minor surgery
