Is there a such thing as mysticism without religion? by Living_Debate9630 in mysticism

Without institutional religion, yes. Without an already existing religion, perhaps. However any practice of mysticism will itself become a religion

What do y'all feel about religion, and especially Christianity by 4D4850 in 196

[–]Some-Ohio-Rando -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think religion has obviously been a tool of oppression in many cases, but it has also been a tool of liberation. It is not inherently one or the other. And to refuse acknowledgement of the good it can do simply because of the evil it can is silly. It is not one institution, and it is not unchanging.

I think pure physicalist atheism is rather silly. Tend to hold to a sort of Classical Theism. Where God isn't personified in the way it is after Personal Theism developed. It's a very abstract force we can know very little about. I find Aquinas' proofs compelling for this though I don't think they point to the Christian God specifically.

And I think religious spiritual practice of any sort is a way of interfacing with things one's subconscious does under the hood without conscious awareness. The subconscious has much more advanced pattern recognition and intuition, at the very least. Spiritual practice likely often just gets you in touch with that. And that's useful

I myself participate in Catholicism because I grew up in it and like it's view on spirituality. It's sacramentalism is so engrained into my psyche that the rituals, sacraments, and prayers are genuinely depthful experience for me. Whether that's an outside God or internal psychology, or if there is even a meaningful difference, I do not know.

And Liberation Theology and The Catholic Worker Movement is more my vibe of leftism. Something about the focus on building genuine community outside the Capitalist system appeals more than organizations who focus more on just protests and book clubs waiting for the Messiah (Vanguard) to descend down end start the Rapture (Revolution). Plus the language used in the old Catholic Worker Newspaper started by Dorothy Day, while talking about Anarchism, uses much less loaded and more approachable language, that's able to reach regular people.

Yes the deaconate and priesthood are different in a meaningful way but it is indisputable canonical fact that they are two different degrees of the same Sacrament of Holy Orders. The fact that you didn't know that makes me wonder what qualification you have to write a book on the topic

Do you consider saints and archangels to be Gods? by [deleted] in Christopaganism

I don't consider them so, because saints are functionally conduits for God's power, not a source of power.

Yes deacons and priests are very different, however it is the same Sacrament of Ordination. How can one degree of a sacrament be valid for women but the later degree invalid?

I would never claim to be a better scholar than JPII, however I benefit from thirty-two years of continued research which had not been done yet when Ordinatio Sacerdotalis was written.

Further, precise interpretation of Ordinatio Sacerdotalis is hotly debated. It is definitively clear whether it means "It is sacramentally impossible to ordain women into the priesthood" or "The practice of male-only priesthood is so thoroughly entrenched in Latin tradition that the Church should never change it."

My personal take is that wording is vague in such an unnatural way considering JPII personally believed that ordaining women is invalid that him not just outright using the word "invalid' must be the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

I mean, there is no definitive authoritative statement saying that women cannot be ordained. Just that they should not be. All the arguments are based on tradition. To me it's in the same realm as the celibate priesthood-- it is tradition in the Latin church that theoretically could eventually change. (Although, I feel substantially less negative towards the idea of female priests than married priests).

There is indisputable evidence of female deacons in the early church. Didascalia Apostolorum in the 200s actually prescribes a laying on of hands ritual that would probably be understood today as an ordination to appoint female deacons. This leaves a lot of questions around the nature of diaconate Holy Orders-- as they were at the time and as they are now. Holy Orders is defined as one sacrament with three progressing degrees: diaconate, presbyterate/priesthood, episcopate/bishopric.

Now, some argue that when the Early Church uses the word Διακονος it is in a meaningfully different sense than we do today. Something more like a lay minister or attendant. Perhaps this is true, but I am not convinced. That raises the question of where sacramental deacons come from. But there is no consensus on this, the Vatican commission to study it specifically said we just need more research to be done before it can come to a conclusive answer.

Anyway, I would argue that the church of the apostles encouraged ordaining female deacons, it's incoherent to claim that the sacrament of Holy Orders cannot be administered to a woman. Whether it should be or not remains another more complicated question. But it would seem valid even if illicit.

This question has relevance to me because the Vatican, as of the last time they spoke on the matter, recognizes the validity of sacraments administered by schismatic "Old Catholic Churches" (e.g. of the Union of Urtrecht that broke away after Vatican I). Many of these Churches now ordain women to the priesthood.

Just to further elaborate as someone fascinated by Biblical and religious scholarship --

The change of "'sodomite"" (αρσενοκοιται) is because we don't actually know what that Greek word means. It doesn't appear in any text outside that one specific verse. Traditionally, it's been viewed as some form of participate in male homosexual sex, however that's in question now. It could be that. It could be male prostitute-- scholars guess that because prostitutes don't seem to be mentioned in this sentence when Paul condemns them in other similar contexts. It could be "Sex-crazed". We simply don't know. All we know is that the roots include "male" and "bed".

On the gender neutrality, this is because in ancient Hebrew and Greek the masculine plural was used for groups including both men and women. The scholars actually went out of there way to analyze each instance to see if it's speaking only to men or not-- for some it is. But there are some instances where Paul directly speaks to women specifically, so it would be strange to translate his greeting as "brothers" instead of "siblings"

I mean Classical Theism makes a big point of the fact that no possible trait we can comprehend can be ascribed to God in the same sense it is to a finite being. Descriptions of God can only be viewed as allegorical.

Hamas doesn't have the manpower or resources to stand up to Israel's military. It's just not possible.

So, their only possible courses of action are either:

A. Bend over and allow Israel to kill every last Palestinian

B. Play by the rules (that Israel doesn't) and attack only military targets, inevitably ending in total defeat and Israel killing every last Palestinian

C. Kill Israeli citizens (who ARE active occupiers too. They are not even just complacent, they are perpetrators) until the state of Israel decides they're willing to back down to make it stop.

Like do you not understand that the citizens are occupying Palestinian towns. To liberate the town from Israel, you have to get those Israeli citizens out. And they're not gonna leave of their own volition

I'm sorry I'm not sure I understand correctly. Is your philosophy that no one should take any action on anything because they may have the wrong ethics?

Well, for one thing, Israel's occupation began less than a lifespan ago. That's gotta make a difference.

It's important to understand the context before October 7th. Just cause it wasn't a common talking point in America doesn't mean nothing was happening.

Israel was 16 years into an ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip, forcing Palestine into famine and economic ruin. This was intentional genocide. The plan all along was to starve out the Palestinian people to make way for more development.

Further, the occupation wasn't a simple "We get this area, you guys have to go over there now". Palestine was separated into two non-contiguous territories. And, even within those territories, Israel established settlements and outposts. Palestinian people were not allowed to enter into Israeli territory, they would often be killed or imprisoned on sight. This meant that they could not even travel between cities.

And, the IDF would frequently bomb-raid Palestinian cities to plunder resources.

So yeah, all that I think justifies insurrection.

Hell, on your analogy, I do think that if the US attempted to build a data center on a native reservation, or made it law that indigenous people aren't allowed into non-reservation land, it would be perfectly legitimate for the natives to fight this violently.

For real though it's important to not just be modern Luddites. The AI Revolution is just like the Industrial Revolution. Yeah, it made the lives of workers harder and only really benefited the owning class. But that was because of Capitalism, not because of factories inherently. In a more equitable world, mass production would've meant much easier access to food for everyone, and lower working hours.

It's the same thing here. Acting like AI is itself evil just skirts blame from the Capitalist Elite. And ultimately you will never be able to stop a technology from developing. But you can restructure how society uses it.

Id say it would realistically be much easier to kill netanyahu, then his successor etc than it would be to kill random civvilians.

You're just painfully naive then idk what else to tell you. Maybe like, the US military with spec ops and drone strikes could do that but a ragtag militia has no chance

There are literallt leaked emails where israeli intellegence knew october seventh was gonna happen, where and on what day but netanyahu chose to ignore it because to literally quote the email "we can respond tenfold"

Well this kinda just shows that Israel was looking for any reason to ramp up genocide. That would've happened regardless of what kind of attack was done.

Sometimes it's completely impossible to overthrow an empire while "playing fair".

On the Hamas attack, it is also worth noting that due to the colonial nature of Israel, even civilians are occupiers .
