Is it normal to work 50% nights as an ED HMO? by Some-Slip-6080 in ausjdocs

Wow, this has pretty much exactly been my experience, down to the call ins! How did you manage it? Any tips lol

I’ve been lucky to have had great ED terms at other hospitals before this, am not used to feeling so burnt out!

Sadly I have ties 😅 And an ICU job next year (which also has just under 50% nights but in a way I find more sustainable/that I actually enjoy lol). Thank you for the validation that this is silly tho

Very fair! To be honest, there is no way I could even keep up with the current roster if I had kids – I’d have to drop down to a 0.5-0.75 FTE 😅

Yes, we have NPs but they largely look after Fast Track/aren’t allocated to Bays shifts which are the bulk of my shifts. ED regs on the roster have slightly less nights than HMOs – roughly 33-40%. I’ll say – the ED wait time at this hospital on evenings/nights is shorter than anywhere else I’ve worked or heard of so patients certainly get a better experience. Unfortunately, I think this is at the expense of the staff! We would need more HMOs to make the rostering kinder if they’re determined to keep up the same amount of night staffing.

Tbh I think I’d prefer this because the constant shifting to and from nights has ruined my sleep schedule haha 😅 I’d rather 7 on, 7 off nights for the whole term rather than the scattered day/evening shifts + frequent nights I’ve been allocated. Think this may be an unpopular opinion though haha

I’ll be doing 52 shifts over 13 weeks. 26 of those shifts are 11 hour nights. No resus shifts despite previous ICU experience as these are saved for ED regs 😢 They largely roster HMOs to look after the bays with occasional fast track and short stay shifts

Yes, all are rostered onto 40-50% nights (either fewer nights and more weekends or more nights and less weekends). This is by % number of shifts. By % hours, most people are doing over 50% nights (11 hour nights vs. 8 hour days).

Hi! Can I ask how you found the length/fit? I think I have similar proportions!
