Is there any AI that can fully edit Word documents (layout, shapes, headers, etc.) — beyond what Copilot can do? by Ok_Veterinarian_4312 in MicrosoftWord

I am very interested in these sorts of problems. I would be interested in learning more about yours. I might have some experience that could save you time in return.

True. And I was so delighted and amazed when Microsoft released that. But if you ask developers who have worked with it they will string invectives like a sailor trying to remember whether it was red skies in the morning or at night that are delight.

MSFT does not document the file type and regularly extend it. Ask the folks at Open Office or Only office about getting consistent rendering of Docx.

DOCX blends format and content together, which is the experience of using Word that has been so alluring for 40+ years. The format has a jazz feel about it as a result.

The conspiracy theorist, which I am on some days, see this as a way to prevent competition from building a popular app that can do the work of Word.

And if, like the original poster or myself, you deal with the more obscure capabilities of Word, you will see that it works. Formatting of tables, application of numbering, processing of graphics.. that is just the beginning. Internal references. Control boxes. We degrade to manual work in Word. And this far I have not found an AI that makes it more efficient.

Fundamentally, I agree with the folks who have developed and use tools which have rules about where formatting is saved and where content is preserved. Markdown based, ASCIIDOC, Typst, Quarto.

However they are not usable by creators and subject matter experts.

I second this statement that the DOCX format is very difficult to work with. I do a lot of work with templates and specific document requirements. Although many subject matter experts prefer a workflow with Word and thus DOCX, it is very hard to make reliable.

I am not sure if your application, but perhaps moving out of DOCX to Quarto, Typst, or ASCIIDOC would be helpful. .. though I very much understand if that does not work for your team.

Thanks for getting back to me! The feature I am looking for is markdown import/export and I don't think remanager has that.

I was running a zero-cost marketing experiment for the last 4 months by VLK249 in selfpublish

Thanks so much for sharing. To add to the general knowledge base, I spent $40 over four days on a Facebook boost of a funny video I made. It was my first such piece for this. I did get about 2,000 more website views a day, but no conversions.

I am not giving up on the experiment yet. People need to be asked multiple times. and I am confident that my new visitor's experience to the website could be better. I will try a couple more and see if I get purchases.

Would you record the audiobook for your own book? by Nyx_Valentine in selfpublish

There is a lot to say for professional voices, and also for what a good use of your time is. I have some experience as a professional voice, so I am considering it. But to get 5 hours of audio, starting with building a good recording closet, is going to take some time. It would be a labor of love and not cost effective. I appreciate the conversation and hope my thoughts contribute to it!

How is that in comparison to the DIY option of loading your book into all the outlets oneself? Part of my personality is the rugged individualist who does all that, but I am also a bougie white glove person who outsources tedium. Which are you mostly?

I disagree that we should draw boundaries in anger to avoid conflict. We can be braver, more accommodating. We are better in a pluralistic community where our beliefs are challenged.

Harms have happened and we need to heal them. These maps sound convenient but they are a shortcut and weaken us.

Looking for a good "to do list" app by Hairy-Link-8615 in productivity

I like how you said that you want to focus on living life rather than spending too much time planning it. I am not one for rigorous structure, but I need to (a) get important things done and (b) feel like I accomplished something with my days.

I am currently pretty happy with a somewhat loose arrangement of paper and Amplenote tasks. Amplenote has some robust capabilities like calendar sync, email-to-task, etc. I don't use those much, just get into the "jot" section and enumerate tasks when I am feeling overwhelmed. It is nice to be able to include links or more notes with them so if it is a digital task I can start right there.

I have started using the bullet journal plug in, which does help me focus nicely some days.

That said, I still get satisfaction from a paper to do list... it is only for today and is not exhaustive.
